Dear Sir: I am a retired Army officer who is the military columnist for
my hometown newspaper, The Fort Worth (TX) Star-Telegram. I am
interested in doing a column on the recently returned remains of 19
Marines killed during the 1942 raid on Butarari Island in the Makin
Atoll in 1942. One of the bodies recently recovered was that of Cpl.
Daniel A. Gaston of Galveston, TX, about 200 miles from Fort Worth. I
was wondering if you could give me any help in contacting Cpl. Gaston's
next of kin in Galveston, if any remain there, or directing me toward
the Raider Association who might also have that information. I would
like to find something of Gaston's youth and background for the column.
I would appreciate any help you can give me. Sincerely, Leslie F.
Perkins, LTC Armor, ret'd.

Colonel, I am from Galveston and am interested in any info you have on Gaston's next of kin. A number of former Marines in Galveston along with the Marine reserve outfit here would like to plan a ceremony in Galveston in memory of Gaston and the other "Makin Marines." Do you know any info? Local Marine unit says they have info that his nearest next of kin is in New York and that Gaston's remains may be interred in Arlington Nat Cemetery. Any info you have would be helpful. Have you written a column for your paper? I'll be glad to do some research at Galveston's Rosenberg Library, Ball and old Kirwin High Schools on Gaston. Thanks,
