Weekend Rambling

Hope everyone enjoyed their 4th of July as much as I did. Friday was spent shooting a bit and Saturday was spent tinkering around the house and shooting after the visits for cookouts.

As I write this, my right side of my body is tingling in pain as I just came in from a foray for chippers and ended up stepping into a yellow jacket nest. I got nailed only three times, twice on the leg and once on the arm. Damn yellow jackets. They have to be some of the most ill tempered insects in Western NC.

I wanted to see some chrony numbers for a couple of guns and so was shooting at a couple targets and then chronying every 10th shot to see where I was. Results were interesting.

With my S400MPR FT with the Classic tube installed I got the following using 7.9gr pellets. Starting fill pressure 150Bar. Ending at 80 Bar.

Shot 1 --798fps
Shot 10--813
Shot 20--814
Shot 30--822
Shot 40--835
Shot 50--848
Shot 60--843
Shot 70--853
Shot 80--854
Shot 90--832
Shot 100-795

Since I have the S400C set up with the same tube, I was curious as to what a shot string from it would look like. The barrel is a bit shorter, and I have a heavier hammer spring in it so I must fill to 200bar on this gun.
7.9gr pellets 200 Bar fill down to 145 Bar

Shot 1--815fps
Shot 10-822
Shot 20-821
Shot 30-822
Shot 40-826
Shot 50-818
Shot 60-806

Interesting that while it was less shots, the spread was quite tight.

I then figured Id try my BigEd B51. I was so impressed with what Tim was doing with his, I figured Id try to emulate. I looked for a recent shot string from Tim to no avail so Tim, if you are reading this, get with me regarding your shot count and what kind of spring you are using.

This test was on a 150 Bar fill down to 90 Bar. 7.9gr pellets and a 2.6mm transfer port.

Shot 1--952
Shot 10-972
Shot 20-996
Shot 30-1004
Shot 40-986
Shot 50-961

Would like to see this one down around 875fps for 75 or so shots. Should be possible Id think. I just now realized that I failed to take a pic of the B51 today. Shame as its really a pretty gun. Ive recently put a different brake on it. Will get a pic soon.

While I was at it, I shot a few others and took some pics. Unfortunately, I had the camera set to low resolution for the pics and so had to re-take pics today in between rain and cloud.

The Condor got a few shots run through it beastly gun this is.

Shot the R9 a few times, nothing of note.

Took out the HW30AW for a quick group.

As well as the R7.

I had been struggling with what scope to use on my DAQ Bandit. Ive had several on there, but no scope that I felt captured the essence of the gun in both aesthetics and functionality. I think I finally found one. I picked up this Japanese made Tasco when I was around 12 years old. I got it at a flea market for $10. I remember that it was $10 because I was a bit shocked at the price, but thought to myself Well, its a 10 power scope! and so I got it. Its a 10x40, fixed parallax at 100 yards. After a quick disassembly and re-parallaxing at 40 yards, it works a treat on the DAQ and looks great on it as well. The prior owner had a brake on it and so the muzzle is a bit barked up.

and while I had the big boy out, I also had to get a shot of the DAQ 308. As mentioned in prior rambles, Ive got this one turned down to 140fpe for about a dozen shots.

Saturday, I worked a bit on my truck. While I cannot say I am a true audiophile, I do enjoy good sound in my vehicles. When the aftermarket stereo was installed by the local Best Buy I specifically asked them to take one of the three pre-amp outputs and run back to the back and just leave it so I could install another amp at a later time.

My setup for a long time was a Panasonic head unit that powered a set of JBL component speakers and a single 10 inch subwoofer powered by a JBL mono amp. This worked out well for a while and recently, I dug out an old amp to power the component speakers for a bit more full range of sound. I found the pre amp leads I had asked the tech to leave and ran my hot, ground, and remote turn on lead for the amp.

Everything sounded great but the left channel would cut in and out. I checked wiring and all seemed well so I figured it had to be the amplifier as it is roughly 20 years old. I replaced it with a small 2 channel amp and it did the same thing. Furious, I tore into the truck and found that the assholes at Best Buy had not run cables from the pre amp out on my deck, but rather jumpered into the rear speaker leads and used a crappy high level to low level adapter! I discarded that and ran the leads to the back of my deck and now enjoy a rich and full sound with no cutting in and out.

Final stats
JBL 6 ½ component speakers with separate tweeter and crossover powered by an Orion 50x2 channel amplifier and a Bazooka EL 10 inch Sub in a hidden enclosure powered by a JBL 150x1 Mono amp. Not boomy and annoying, just pleasant and rich sound.

While shooting Saturday, I kept hearing a slight rustle in the leaves and kept thinking it was a chipmunk toying with me. After some time, I noticed an Eastern Box turtle walking about. I went to go check her out and found she had a cracked shell and flies had already laid eggs all around her. The flies were still swarming as she tried to get away.

I took her and washed off the fly eggs, which Im sure wasnt pleasant and doused her wounds with peroxide and then rinsed several times. I kept her until today when the wife and I went out and I took her to our local Nature Center where her shell will be fixed and she will be rehabilitated. Since she was not bleeding through her nose or mouth, chances are that she sustained no internal injuries. She did eat a bit and drank some water while I kept her in a box for a couple days. Seems a bit silly to go through that for a common turtle, but really was no skin off my teeth and Im sure the turtle appreciated it.

This morning I shot the dumbest chipmunk I have ever seen. Those who know me know that I despise chippers. They are fast, hard to spot, and harder to shoot. I saw one this morning outside my door and grabbed the S400C. I slipped open the door, fully expecting it to bolt, but rather it stood there not 10 yards away and just LOOKED at me. I raised the gun and there is no missing with that thing. One less chipper around my house to dig under the porch and foundation of the house

Rob
When you read a post from a kindered spirit you can not help but understand totally where you are coming from.
Your guns are amazing. Your suggestions for my acquisions have been very helpful. I do not regret any purchases I have been advised in this forum.
Looks like the wine is taking a toll this evening. I had a full day off other than church so a lot of things go done around the house an on the car.
Cheers

Another great Ramble, Rob.

You have a very diversified collection there.
I can't decide which of the 400s I prefer, so you will have to send both of them for me to test. LOL.

We need to get a few of us together for a shooting day in your area.

Cheers, David.

Interesting ...

July 6 2009, 9:40 PM

Gotta look into that MRP. Popped about 1/2 dozen chippers and the summer is still young! Most taken at the 40 yard line with S200. Funny, that's my zero and now you know why.

Another great rambling. Thanks.

LL
