Yes the gap sounds about normal for a standard (=non-Turbo) car. And yes, unless you're a pensioner over 70, that will make your eyes hurt!
You can lower the front suspension by fitting lowering springs to standard-height shockers. If you renew the shockers at the same time, don't buy Monroe Sensa-Tracs as they aren't suitable for use with lowering springs. Sachs or Boge gas-pressure shockers are relatively inexpensive and perform quite OK.
As for the lowering springs, many manufacturers have already removed the R9/11 from their catalogues, but at least the Italian
OMP has them for the R11 Turbo. I guess they lower 35 mm, so your car would drop appr. 50 mm (original Turbo suspension is already about 15 mm lower).
That's about the max you can drop without damaging the standard-length shockers.
