Hello,

Althought a R18 is quite different from a R11, I'm sure your experience with Renaults will be helpfull.

I have a 1984 R18 GTX with only 30,000 km in its body and I have two problems.

The first problem is with throttle. Sometimes, when I drive at 3,000 rpm and I have to stop, when I remove my foot from the gas pedal, the pedal doesn't move at all and engine remains at its revs.

The second problem is whith the rear brakes. Some weeks ago, when the car had to be serviced, the brake shoes where replaced. Now, when I push the brake, specially if car is cold, a noise similar to a cow moo comes from the rear part of the car.

Could anybody give me some suggestion about these problems?

Thank you very much.

Sergio

Accelerator problem

Check the accelerator cable to run easily back and forth and at the end from the engine there should be a spring which puts the pedal back in place when you remove the foot from the gas pedal. Do you have it?

re-steel rope

Hi Sergio,
I am a R9 owner and I have got the same problem like yours. My opinion is the same like Ady,s,first check the pedal cable. In my case the steel rope sticking in the cover especially in winter. I put a little oil inside with thin nurse needle and it,s O.K. now. About a sound from the brakes. There is a different materials for a brake jaws. Some are softer some are harder. In the beginning I have got the same moo sound and if I drive with open rear wind screens it was a terrible smell of burnt rubber. Don’t worry but if it is not hard for you just check them again for sure.
Regards.
Tisho.

carburettor linkage, throttle spindles

No score for this post

Besides a faulty throttle cable, also check the linkage on the carburettor. It can be dirty or corroded and therefore sticking in an open position. If needed, clean it and lubricate all pivoting points lightly . But only apply a drop or two of lubricant, too much oil will just draw dust and debris like a magnet...

Some Weber carburettors are also known to suffer from a distorting carburettor base. The part where the throttle butterfly spindles are goes "banana shape", and the spindle starts to stick in its boring. This can sometimes be rectified by dismantling the carburettor and VERY LIGHTLY sanding down the spindle to help it turn freely in the boring.
