Sorry-- but the 85 Alliance (USA car) is NOT like it's Euro cousin (R-9) because you MUST Take out the passengers half shaft to get out the starter, and yes-- almost everybody in the USA with these cars knows that-- but there is a solution....

in late of 86, and 1987, a BOSCH smaller starter was introduced so you DID NOT HAVE TO YANK OUT THE HALFSHAFT-- and the AMC motors did this because dealers were complaining it was a super pain in the rear to get at something so simple.....

so once you have out the starter, ask for a replacement starter of the BOSCH type-- then you wil never have this problem again...

cost of starter should be about $100 u.s.d. depending on where you buy it, but the Bosch should be more reliable than the Paris Rhone or Ducellier which is very large and leads to the problem of taking out the half-shaft

these early Alliance cars are not easy-- but once this half shaft thingy is done, it becomes easier--- ALSO GET A USE 'HAYNES' REPAIR MANUAL-- IT HELPS IMENSLY.....
