Does a post-10/86 Renault 9 bootlid spoiler fit straight in place of an earlier one, i.e. are the mounting holes unchanged on later lids?

My 9 currently has no spoiler, but I'm planning to fit one. I have a spare '82 bootlid in good condition I'm going to use as the original is going a bit feathery at the lower edge. This spare lid has an early rubber-coated spoiler (GTL version), but it's perished and I prefer the flatter design of the latest version (post-10/86). I'll have to respray the spare as it's different colour than my car, so I'm also going to de-badge it and weld the badge mounting holes while I'm at it.

Spoiler in USA was very FLAT!

Hi Juha!!!--- the USA Spoiler of the 1987 GTA (R-9)had a very FLAT profile, for the Trunk lid, or Boot as you call it, but the reason I tell you this is IF you do drill into the Deck lid, Boot, or Trunk lid, and mount a spoiler, or any spoiler-- MAKE SURE YOU SEAL THE HOLES- because most of the ones I have seen have RUST (ed) or are RUSTING because Water got into the holes, Penetrated the Deck lid and now rust has messed up a nice looking rear end of the car....
I am not sure HOW to repair it, either by tring to take some kind of Liquid sealer, and rolling it around the inside of the Boot, to seal the now perforated metal, or sandblasting the rust away and re-painting-- that will take many hours just to make it look good again-- all because the Factory did not use sealer on the Holes!!!!
How about something Radical like a Whale Tail on a R-9 ?????
Good Luck- Joe in usa........

Bl**dy 'ell, now I've seen it all!!!

Well, it's different...

...and, errmmm...

...different!

Seriously, I personally prefer a 'clean' understated look (some would say a German look) underlined by lowering and massive rims. Just like that GTA cabrio used to be. But I understand that nowadays you'll need something radical to stand out from the pack at carshows with all that 'bizarre tuning' there.

If anyone else is interested, that DTM wing (or something very similar) is available from an Italian manufacturer called Lester. There's a pic of it on their website (http://www.lester.it), it's listed under Universal products. The price, if I remember correctly, was a little over 200 euros.

Rustproofing's vital, I know

Fortunately my spare lid is from a model that had a spoiler when it left the factory, so I don't need to drill any holes (provided the new flat-style spoiler fits directly in place of an older type).

Euro-9 spoiler mounting holes were sealed with small rubber washers slipped over the spoiler's molded-in threaded fastening studs (that the word?). That solution seems to work, as e.g. the spare lid I have is rust-free after having led a hard, roadsalt-filled life for over 15 years.

BTW, US-English uses the word 'trunk', in UK-English it's 'boot'. I guess referring to a smallish trunk as 'booty' is not very wise in the US? ;-)

GTA body kits and spoilers

No score for this post
May 20 2001, 4:31 AM

There are two different body kits for the GTA and two different spoilers. I was told by my father who worked for reanult and by the guys at Renault Jeep Sport that the early GTA cars were shipped here as R9 GTX cars without motor and interior then converted to USA GTA's in Wisconsin. Henc ethat is why there are two kits. The Renault GTX and early GTA cars had a more ski jump style rear wing similar to the zender unit sold by Renault Jeep Sport, and the rear quarter trim panels that blend the body kit into the rear bumper had a black rubber moulding on it which hid the mounting bolts. The later USA built GTA cars had a flatter chrysler designed spoiler that was also wider and the rear body side cladding did not have the black rubber strip on it. I have had GTA cars with both versions on them. I also have noticed that some early GTa cars had rear disk brakes. I have seen probubly 5-10 GTA cars with the rear Disk brake s on them all of these cars also had the early style ski jump spoiler and black rubber mouldings on the rear body side cladding. I also hav enoticed that all the disk brake cars were convertables. One last clarification my GTA says made in Canada all over it now last time I checked Kenosha Wisconsin is not in CANADA! wHAT GIVES.
