Driveshaft replacing

Hello,

The rough-idling-problem is not yet solved; I moved it downwards on my yet-to-fix-list.

Last MOT (March), the drive shaft boots were gone. The garage placed new ones. The left side driveshaft was noisy already. Yesterday, I found out the left rubber boot had black grease on its outside. So the boot is gone in less than 3 months (<5000 km)!! Assuming they mounted the new boot properly, the driveshaft/homokinetic must be worn so much, that it cuts the rubber boot into pieces..

Now I planned to go to a scrapyard to get a new driveshaft. I hear a rattling noise (doonk-doonk-doonk)when I turn to the left (loud), and also when accelerating (less loud); what do I need to replace? Everything between the gearbox and the wheel?

What's the most difficult part of the driveshaft job? Untightening the 30mm wheelnut? Last time I tried to loose the nut, I didn't succeed. Maybe some creep oil (English?) will help..

Greetings,
Maarten.

Small correction. But nevertheless the boot has gone too early

I bought a 'new' driveshaft (from Eijsink in Haaksbergen, thanks John for the tip), for EUR 34. I arranged a mate to help me tomorrow and we'll see if we are able to change the driveshaft ourselves.. I don't have very special tools, but I hope we can do it without them.
Hopefully, the weather gets better... at this moment, it's raining here. I don't have a garage, so it has to be dry

Greetings, Maarten

OK, the new driveshaft (left) is in place. I bought a small flamethrower this morning to heat up the wheelnut; loosening him was the toughest part. It's fun to play with the flamethrower It took us (a friend and myself) the whole day (10 am - 5 pm) to do the job but it was very educational.

The ticking sounds when accelerating are gone now. It's quiet there..
But... I still hear the same ticking noise (not as bad as before) when I turn to the left very sharply. It occurs only when turning left, not when turning right or driving straight ahead. What could this be? Play in the steering bar? A worn steering ball? A worn driveshaft on the right?

I'll do some tests as described in the Haynes' manual to feel where the play occurs, when I've got some time left. I think I can find out it myself, but maybe you have a suggestion..

Greetings,
Maarten

Well, I found out the driveshaft on the right has play also; the shaft could turn a little when the wheel stood still... not good.

This morning I got a new shaft, the old one is almost out of the car; the only stupid thing is the pin that keeps the shaft on the differential (not sure this is the English word for it, I mean the device that enables the right and left wheels to have different speeds). It's hard to remove the pin :(

I'll get a better tool to tick the pin out of the shaft. So far I demolished a screwdriver.. I tried to hammer on a bolt that I put in the hole; I tried to put the crank under the bolt, with a block of wood between them. But the whole car came up instead of only the pin

Somebody got a tip?

Well, that's a little too optimistic maybe.. but the new shafts are in place and the noise is completely gone! Yahooo!

It costed me 34+23=57 Euros (plus some money for new tools) and two very educative days of learning.. That feels good.
