I'll pitch in mine, and hope others will join in as well.
I like a dog to respond when ever they hear their name, so I start all pups on a simple exercise of saying their name and then rewarding that behavior as soon as they respond. When I can get their attention 7 out of 10 times, or as they are learning to give me their attention, I teach them to sit as well.
I like to think of "puppy training" as simply teaching communication. In their young world sounds don't have a form or a function, so I start giving sounds those qualities, then as they comprehend that different sounds (the form) have different functions they can respond accordingly.
