This was a question on another board and the topic seemed appropriate here. So this was my response.
Now this is one of those I just love to write about! Having spent a few decades in the guard dog business as owner and trainer for one of the largest companies in the US and Mexico I feel qualified to offer a little insight here.
First let's be clear the alarm companies were my competitors, but as such I got to know them and how efficient they were, compared to my dogs, from the front row. I can say with absolute certainty and authority that no other product in the world to day can boast the efficiency record of electronic alarms.
In my experience they are the one thing that did exactly what they were supposed to do, every time, with out failure 100%. Every alarm I know recorded the EXACT hour, minute, and second, that someones valuables, and possessions walked out of their house, building or yard. This is especially important when the police show up to fill out the burglary report, keeps it really accurate, like the list of missing items.
Dogs on the other hand are not as 100% effective. As humans are generally considered smarter than dogs, they sometimes will outsmart them, if they are really determined to get past one. However the only time I have seen people that determined is when it is something personal, business partners, divorce, etc. The rest of your burglar crowd wants to get a score and get out (after all if they wanted to work long hours they could get a job) It is much easier to move down the street to another house than take a chance.
Dogs also canNOT record the time of the break in for you, they will how ever Stop the theft from occurring. Many times retaining the slimes so you can compare then to the photos in your security camera. Sometimes after such a clash the burglar may still leave the scene but sufficient DNA may still be found around the lip and gum area of the dog, not something an alarm will collect for you.
So I guess the choice depends on the type of person you are. If you are a real stickler for record keeping, filling out accurate insurance loss reports etc. you should get the 100% alarm system.
If you don't enjoy shopping for replacement electronics, you might like the dog.
Oh, before I forget, someone mentioned they felt the average person shouldn't or couldn't take a dog to that “level of training” may I point out that the first job Canines had was guarding the extra Tyrannosaurus steaks left in the cave. If you can't do as good a job as those guys, well, the Alarm company is in the phone book.
And for those not aspiring for parts in a Geico commercial, well that's why you have K9 PRO SPORTS
