goto the MUA website, click on the University Books online link, and the directory will tell you required/recommended books by semester. Or you will get the list in your acceptance packet.
I believe AMSA members get a discount on textbooks, also check your local medical bookstore for used books.

i am a prospective foreign medical student. if for some reason my interview does not go well for the us school i hope to get in to i will start applying to foreign schools. i have heard a lot about mua, saba, ross, auc, and a few in belize and mexico. i would like to know how some of you ended up where you are now. did you choose to go out of the country because some foreign schools seem to have an accelerated program? did your performance in the classroom dictate where you decided to attend? are you not a us citizen? because of money? and do you think the school you attend will have much of an effect on how well you do on usmle, choice of clinical rotation, or residency? please respond with helpful info. and please do not be offended for my line of questioning.

I was wondering if anyone knows what the pre-med program at MUA is like? I applied for the Sept class but they feel that I should take a semester of pre-med to prove myself and then start Med in Jan 2002. If anyone did this route how was it? Did anyone have problems getting into the Med program after taking the pre-med program?? Thanks for all your help.

I've been in school for 7 years now with two degrees. I didn't do too well with the first one but the second one was better. They just have reservations that's all. So if I do well there I'll get in for Jan.

So.....you did have the pre-reqs before applying but they want you to do the pre-med program for a semester anyway in order to feel confident that you could handle the work load? Or you didn't have the pre-reqs (orgo, bio, etc) and so thats why they feel you need to do the extra semester before med?

I have a few questions if a current MUA student could answer:
1. The dorm is apparently eight miles from the classrooms; how often does the bus run and what is its basic schedule? Is is reliable?
2. After the first semester, are the apartments or houses available to rent plentiful and are they near the classrooms? What is the means to get from these locations to the classrooms? Is a car necessary?
3. How was the meal plan? I heard it was $700 for a semester and consisted of the evening meal only. Were the meals okay? Please comment.
Thanks for your comments!!

1. The dorm is 1.5 miles from campus.
2. The buses run every morning, return every afternoon and make a library run in the evening.
3. The school has its own cafeteria, on campus, for breakfast, lunch and snacks. There is no meal plan associated with the dorm. There is a rest. next to the dorm and a few other places within walking distance (Pizza Beach, etc). The dorms do have a microwave & small refrigerator, AC, private bath, utilities included for $275 a month.
Hope this helps...

As you may know, SABA University and MUA are affiliated. So, many of the hospitals which are listed for SABA also take MUA students, and visa versa. Right now MUA has only taken about 20 clinical transfer students, rotating in NC, GA, IL, MI, LA, IN, etc.
Like SABA, the clinical staff at MUA take full responsibility for placing students in their core clinicals. Elective rotations are selected by the student with help from MUA. All rotations are in the US, although they will place non-US students in the hospital on Nevis (60+ beds), or in their home country, if they request.

I'm a MUA student, and would actually like clarification on your post. Do your mean, if I am a Non US student, like in my example being Canadian, I CANNOT do my rotations in the US or do you mean I have the OPTION to do them else where.
Anyways, I would appreciate a reply on that.
Thanx

Just as in SABA, all students currently do their clinical in the US - that means Canadian students as well as US students. However, if a students is from another country (i.e., Germany), they may prefer to do their clinicals in their home country. That option is always open. I know this sounds strange, but some international students may NOT want to do their clinicals in the US. We try to accommodate our students in any way possible. I hope this answers your question.

I am coming to Nevis in sptember. I would like to know what is the phone situation there. Should I purchase a special cell phone or some prepaid calling cards. Please let me know.
Thanks

Helen, I looked into the cell phone thing and found only one provider that has a phone that works worldwide ( 80 different countries so far), and this is nextel. With that being said, I don't think that this phone will work in nevis, but I am still looking into that. I do believe there are cell phones that work by using a GPS or similar satelite system. But those are probably too expensive. I beleive someone said that there's a cell phone service provider on the island. I hope this helps somewhat.
