Working with stainless steel

First time for me, and it was an ordeal. Parting off is hard enough but this was gruesome. Not an airgun part, just some special size washers for the boat. Is there a trick to working with stainless steel?

I got the material from the local 'boiler works', don't know specifically what stainless it is. Different angles on the cutting tool, different cutting fluid maybe? I did slow it way down, which helped a little.
