I'm "red faced and embarrased" by the way I've been using my digital calipers........

when measuring my lathe cut parts. Ya see.....I've been getting a rough measurement then subtracting the amount of feed to end up close to the desired part diameter, then sneak up on the finish diameter.

Well....today I was watching a YouTube lathe video and the operator set his digital caliper to the desired setting, then "zero'd out" the caliper and machined the part till the final measured diameter on the caliper was zero.

LOL......this process certainly bypasses the "measure & subtract method that I've always used till now!

Here is the video I found.......

Well, if that method causes you to be red faced.....

consider yourself among the 99 percentile group of us that know how to subtract. That method you viewed is usually applied to production work and an attempt to "idiot-proof" the machine operator's.

I'm one of the 99%

I don't like electronic measuring tools; I've had poor experiences with dead batteries and temperature sensitivity with them. I can read my dial calipers to within 0.0005". Did yoiu notice the video left room to sneak up on the finish size with a spring pass? I also noticed the spindle speed was faster than I would normally run with a HSS tool; maybe the tool was carbide.

The method works as long as the initial value entered is correct

IF you err, There is nothing to catch your attention. That is, no second look at the value.

Same situation if you are "remembering" an incorrect target number, so I suppose it goes both ways.

Maybe I'm slow, but I often need a second chance at getting things right wink.gif
