Response to Deprivation (being deprived of something - not having it)

DEPRIVATION ... Smokers tell themselves, "I've got to stop smoking," all the time. This just is not true, and has a poisonous effect on stopping smoking. No one has to stop smoking. It IS a good idea. Sometimes its even a matter of life and death. But no one has to do it. You always have a choice. Even people with advanced emphysema can smoke--and often do. "I've got to stop," is untrue and irresponsible. It creates resistance and destroys motivation. "I'm choosing to stop," defuses the resistance, and enables me to feel free and strong about not smoking.
