Rose-le Mania?
Pete Promoted in Tacky WWE Fame Ceremony
It's strange how Pete Rose, who earned more real hits than anyone in MLB history ... has been honored by a "sport" based on fake ones. Just call it "ROSE-LE MANIA."
This past weekend, Rose accepted an invitation from World Wrestling Entertainment Chairman Vince McMahon to be honored as a celebrity inductee into pro wrestling's newly-created "Hall of Fame." Rose, who holds MLB's all-time hits record, but bet on baseball games while acting as manager of the Cincinnati Reds in the 1980s, couldn't have joined more appropriate company. "Charlie Hustle" was saluted alongside the likes of the late Andre the Giant, a 500-pounder, who once tried out for the National Football League, George "the Animal Steele," a bald but otherwise hideously hairy creature known for his green-colored tongue and apetitie for turnbuckles and a host of other thought leaders.
It's obvious that by holding a "Pete Rose Hall of Fame" event as a preview to "Wrestlemania XX" -- (the WWE's Super Bowl) -- McMahon was poking fun at MLB. Baseball has already embarrassed itself with recent problems -- most notably steroid use among players. Perhaps McMahon was simply looking to recruit?
Rose, who is crying to every talk-show host in America, claiming he deserves to be in baseball's Hall of Fame despite the gambling incident, clearly needs to keep a lower profile these days. But, he decides to be part of a Hall of Shame ceremony with one of the sleaziest organizations around ... helping McMahon poke fun at the American pastime, which has taken a few head-butts of his own in recent months.
