Warrior talks about WWE DVD, WWE threaten's legal action, Current TV situation and moreMarch 15 2005 at 7:00 PM | PhenomForest.com | |
| - WWE sent a legal letter to New York wrestling fan Anthony DeBlasi on Friday. DeBlasi runs a wrestling news website and hotline and had been putting together a bus trip for the upcoming Shane Douglas "Hardcore Homecoming" show.
WWE's main problem with DeBlasi was that he was promoting the Douglas show as an "ECW Reunion" show.
In the letter, WWE demanded that DeBlasi stop using the term "ECW" and "Extreme" when promoting the bus trip. Of course, WWE only owns the rights to the phrase "Extreme" when used with "Championship Wrestling."
WWE also threatened to file a civil lawsuit against DeBlasi.
DeBlasi commented on the situation over the weekend, blasting WWE for the threats and claiming that he is having "Eastern Championship Wrestling" copyrighted so he can continue to use the phrase "ECW."
DeBlasi has been on WWE's radar for awhile. They had threatened a lawsuit against him a few months back because he was hosting video footage of Bradshaw doing his controversial Nazi march in Germany on his website.
WWE has made it clear that they do not mind talent working the Douglas show as well as their ECW PPV, but that Douglas cannot use the term "ECW" to promote his show since WWE owns all the rights to ECW.
- Interestingly enough, WrestleMania 21 falls on Daylight Savings, with RAW the next night going up against the NCAA National Championship game. The RAW after WrestleMania is usually one of the highest rated of the year.
- The Ultimate Warrior put up the following statement on his website regarding the upcoming WWE Ultimate Warrior DVD release:
"At this juncture, it is still unconfirmed if this DVD will be released at all. WWE's DVD schedules have changed in previous years, and this one may be no different. What can be confirmed, however, is that if this DVD is released it will not involve Warrior, but will be a compilation of old matches. There will be no collaboration between WWE and Warrior on the project. AGAIN IT MUST BE SAID...Warrior is NOT returning to World Wrestling Entertainment."
Interestingly enough, Warrior is also working on an autobiography.
- The Associated Press ran an article this weekend regarding the WWE TV situation with Spike TV.
An executive with Spike who spoke on condition of anonymity said that one of the reasons that the network dropped WWE was because "wrestling was never as popular with advertisers as it was with audiences."
The network executive also added that they are moving towards scripted programing rather than reality shows.
No other statements were released from Spike, WWE or USA Network.
Broadcasting & Cable in the meantime reports that McMahon is in deep negotiations with NBC Universal to use their TV stations and other businesses that fall under their corporation to increase WWE's popularity.
