What are these positive affirmations exactly? Is the effect meant to be similar to hypnosis?

Positive affirmations are not the same thing as hypnosis or even self-hypnosis. But they could be used together, as you could use self-hyponosis as a way of trying to increase the effect of positive affirmations.
