wow, i thought it was just me

i HATE apt-get! i hate synaptic and all that crap. gimme .pup (not .pet) or .dsl packaegs (or uci!) and not a million little packages in the name of space saving...

here's the best way to do package management. a registry holds each installed package and the libs it needs, including the recommended version of each needed lib.

then when you uninstall a package, it shows you a list of the dependencies beginning with the unneeded ones. those are uninstalled unless you deselect them.

if you click "more info" it also shows you a list of dependencies of OTHER apps still installed. these are NOT uninstalled unless you select them.

also there is a "repair" option that lets you select OTHER versions of libs on the system. if ff can use the existing version of gtk2, it doesn't need to install a new one, but it will by default, giving you two versions. if you uninstall the newer gtk2, it won't uninstall unless you tell it "do it anyway" when it says ff needs it. then you "repair" ff, pointing to the other install of gtk2, or reinstalling the recommended one.

most of the stuff for doing this already exists in linux.

however, the way they use it is just stupid. it could be so much better, and not be more complicated to the person that wasn't paying attention... it would actually be easier for the person not paying attention to uninstall things, because without configuring, s/he would have one more uninstall options than before, when s/he tried to remove for instance... the email application for mozilla.
