Honestly, I was just taking a look at uClibc (or µClibc, if you prefer) yesterday because I needed a C library to build a cross-compiler, and glibc refused to build the way I thought it was supposed to build. It claims to be compatible with glibc for the most part, and it's not nearly as large.
However, a fork of glibc specifically for embedded targets is a great idea.
Aside: I used to (wrongly) hate Debian solely because of the fact that Ubuntu was based on it, and I hated Ubuntu (this much is still true). Guess what distro I use now? Yep! I use Debian! ^_^
