Question for Dr. Goodyear

Approximately two months ago after heavy lifting (moving furniture) I woke up in the night with shooting pain and the right side of my scrotum two to three times its normal size. There is no more lump or enlargement, but still experience pain and tightness. When I see my doctor he says that he can't feel a hernia. If a hernia pushed down into the scrotum could you still be able to discover it after the fact if it is reducible? Are there other ways to discover the hernia if it has followed the inguinal canal into the scrotum?
Because of my present situation and my referral I am not scheduled to see a surgeon until November. I still experience tightness in the scrotum area almost daily and unpredictable pain (shooting or dull ache in the scrotum).

Thanks for your help.

Gilles

Gilles,

This most certainly sounds like an incarcerating, Inguinal Hernia,(Indirect), which subsequently reduced. Examinaton by a skilled and competent physician, familiar with the pathology and evaluation of hernias, and experienced in these skills should be able to detect such a hernia, even if it is now reduced. Continued pain, without an obvious bulge, is not too uncommon in such circumstances.

Dr. Goodyear,
Thanks for your response. I appreciate how you respond to so many people asking questions about various hernia situations. So much information out there and sometimes hard to keep it all in perspective.

Another quick question

August 12 2008, 12:08 PM

Dr. Goodyear, lately I have been feeling pretty good. I still have tightness, but manageable. Can a hernia be considered a ticking time bomb to a certain degree? What are possible risk factors that could cause issues with a hernia worsening or causing serious issues.

Thanks

Gilles

Hernias (more so large and symptomatic hernias) that are neglected and untreated, do run the progressively increased risk of not only progressive enlargement, but also complications such as Incarceration and Strangulation.
