It is so interesting. I am hearing more and more that once one gets a hernia they will continue to get them the rest of their lives. It is a weakness in everyone the groin and belly button area but more of a weakness in some people then others. Surgery is the only way unfortuantly to repair a hernia but it seems only repairs it for 5-10 years. |

Where are you getting the information that surgery only works for 5-10 years. Yes there maybe some patients that have this problem, but its not the norm. |

Hi Jeff, Brad is right, I also have read that in case studies, and in surgeons reports that hernia surgery, in the tension form can last from 3 years to up to 10, but most only around 5 years, but also other people won't ever be bothered by them again..... I posted something that I found yesterday. I was compairing how from days of the Biblical, to today how both fishermen and surgeons used and use the same material. Todays world mesh patch is made either from polyethylene or polyproylene which in the fishermans world it's known as (monofilament or mulitifilament - you look these words up) neither have a very long life span, in the fisherman world got keep clean, around saltwater it gets brittle breaks if not taken care of. alot of people after cast neting and wash out the nets will soak in fabric softener to keep it plyable. Here is something else that has a strong link together, Herniosis-which is different in everyone. but here latly this word has popped up alot on tv ads (Fibromyalgia). both have some of the same characteristics. I feel that the mesh has lived it's life out, and now FDA has to come up with a new way to cover up the mistake. How else but use the word Fibromyalgia. Just my thoughts.. which all lands in the laps of doctors and surgeons... |

Jeff from two surgeons I have been told this. It does make one wonder. They tell me that mesh will eventually wear out. The surgeon that did my last repair which is the prolene hernia system well I asked him about this too in e-mail. He responded and said well they have not confirmed it but they are close to realizing that there is no cure for a hernia. Surgery will temporarily fix it but not for good. I am realing believing this too. |

I find that very strange, I had a stitch repair 36 years ago and it is still holding strong. I wish that surgeon (Dr. Lupovici) was still alive, I would have had the other side repaired by him also. So Linda and Brad, sorry I can't agree with your thoughts on this. |

Anonymous;I am researching all material that is used in the mesh and other stuff that it is used in; meaning in the medical and everyday things polyethylene-polyproylene or monofilament muitifilament is used in.We know that it breaks down in the body or body rejection. BUT think outside the box at it's use, as everyday products, like car dash boards, left in the sun or heat it get's brittle that is if you don't protect it. pvc water pipes, which has a uv rating, water bottles and some food containers leached chems out of them a researcher from Canada found last year. but yet saltwater effects it also as in fishing line. it's not environmental friendly. I can go on but it's just getting to scary to me to be used in one's body.after reading so many different sites about peoples bodies rejection. I also had the stitch repair going on 6 years with the Mayo technique, with Ethibond sutures in an interrupted manner I had entrapment. Now last year 2008 recurrence of it. Stitch method used on a Ventral hernia, when two prior surgeries were present, which caused the hernia to begin with. Which yesterday I found out that Ethibond is made by Ethicon, which had a recall on sutures in 2007, But you said that you had surgery some 36 years ago, not knowing your age this isn't to be smart butt, but what type of sutures were used, and the stitch technique used?? I just think with our environment changing, our bodies immune respones and immune system does also, I feel that the rejection is within our own systems, and ties to how food break down in our systems as in fatty acid and sugar, but also all the chems that are in drinking water, that has to have effects on the tissue blood cells..here I'm thinking about peopls fasting... any way we are off the topic of my posting of yahoo news. over the health insurance problems, and how insurance companies either don't want insure pre-existing medical conditions without charging you a higher premiums, or dropping you altogether, because they aren't making anything off from us in the long run. If the CDC/FDA did their jobs right and had what ever they need to fix their break down, here is where the model of the swiss cheese theory comes in, the rest of the health, medical world wouldn't be where it is. In a sham wow condition. my point and veiw for the day. maybe.Maybe the old days of surgery should be on a come back with pure natural remedies herbs, minerals, organic...... |
