Dear Dr.,

My wife (38 Year) had an operation for Umblical Hernia on 07th May 2009.

Now she is admitted in the hospital due to the Pus occured in the operated area and two times they opened to clean and given antibiotics.

Could you please let me know why this happening again and agains. Is there any surgical fault or any allergic problem for the Mesh...

Your answer much appreciated.

thanks
Antony William

I would say it's an infection. But you need to ask the surgeon if she could be alergic to the mesh. I had surgery almost six weeks ago, and mine is still draining. But we're talking two months with her. I don't think its surgical. Maybe stronger antibiotics? Good luck.

Pus draining from any surgical incision is most consistent with infection. Culture of the the drainiage to confirm the presence of bacteria and to 'direct' antibiotic coverage is often appropriate.

When mesh is used in a hernia repair, and the incision is continuously draining pus, despite drainage and antibiotics, repeat surgery with complete mesh removal may be required.
