I don't see how you can recommend an institute that uses a heavyweight mesh?

I'm curious, where did you see that he recommended Hernia Inst of FL? I talked with one of the docs there just yesterday and was surprised that they do not use UltraPro in most cases, only Prolene or similar meshes. The doc mentioned that the Prolene was easier to deal with because it maintains some shape. The UltraPro he thought was just a bit to flexible and difficult to place behind the muscle.

I posted a question yesterday for Dr. Goodyear to possibly express his opinion on the UltraPro vs Prolene issue. I've been trying to decide between Florida and NPHI and now I'm again leaning towards going to NPHI just to get the thinner UltraPro. I'm a runner and very active and don't want to feel anything when I move. The Prolene looks like window screen from Home Depot.

If you look at the website under technique its explained the preferred system at NPHI is the Prolene hernia system.

Right it does say that, but I think the website hasn't been updated since the introduction of UltraPro. Pretty sure that Dr. Goodyear uses UltraPro when appropriate. I believe it was stated on this message board, somewhere. The doc that I talked to at Hernia Inst. of FL doesn't like or use UltraPro at all.

Every prospective hernia surgery patient should insist on seeing and touching a sample of the type of mesh his surgeon is recommending during the office visit. They can then decide if they want that implanted into their insides. It is only fair. I had the occasion to do so and was shocked at the thickness and sharp cut edges of the prolene mesh. Therefore opted for suture only repair by expert surgeon.

I have to admit, when I saw the edges of an UltraPro "device" I was wondering about those rough edges also. It seems like the pointy ends would eventually irritate surrounding tissue. I'll bet it would feel sharp if you just rubbed it against your skin. It looks like the doctor needs to run it over a flame to smooth the sharp cut ends. Like sealing the end of a nylon rope. I'm planning to go to NPHI and do favor mesh repair, but it would be nice if Dr. G or other surgeon addressed this concern. The doctor in the attached picture is holding a UltraPro structure. See for yourself.

Did the surgeon advise you on what were some of the possible risks of doing a suture only repair?

Personally, I (the person who posted the picture) favor a mesh repair. Right now just a little curious about the edges as shown in the photo. I know the body has a way of coating things to stop irritation, but one does have to wonder about those pointy ends left after scissor cutting to fit the repair site. Hoping the doc has time to comment on this.

We utilize ULTRAPro Hernia System in over 70 % of Inguinal Hernia Cases.

I also can assure those with concern, the edges seen on the photograph above on this forum are not at all problematic, In fact, about 50%of the material is absorbed overtime, leaving a soft, wafer-thin, yet fully and efficiently strong enough to effectively repair the hernia with this product.

I have heard of Parietex mesh. I think this is the mesh of choice of Dr. Ramshaw when I talked to a patient of his.
But I never spoke to Dr. Ramshaw yet as I am not certain where he is moving to. Parietex is Polyester based.

Hmmm, now I am out of excuses for not having surgery. I guess I better get it done before the government takes over my medical care and cancels my insurance.
