WASHINGTON (AP) - House Democrats are at an impasse over whether their remake of the nation's health care system would effectively allow federal funding of abortion.

At least two dozen anti-abortion Democrats believe it would, and while their opposition is unlikely to stall the legislation in the end, they are at odds with Democratic leaders just weeks ahead of anticipated floor action on the bill.

The bishop explained the churchs stance, saying that while the church supports health care overhaul, we are adamantly opposed to health care legislation that threatens the life of unborn children, requires taxpayers to pay for abortion, rations health care, or compromises the conscience of individuals.

Congressman Kennedy continues to be a disappointment to the Catholic Church and to the citizens of the state of Rhode Island, the bishop said. I believe the congressman owes us an apology for his irresponsible comments. It is my fervent hope and prayer that he will find a way to provide morally responsible leadership for our state.

Tax paid abortions, no.

I would be disappointed if the new healthcare program would authorize taxpayer paid abortions except in cases where the mother's health or life is in jeapordy. Given the fact that a high number of abortions are by black women and that a high number of uninsured today are blacks, then it follows that a high number of blacks will be covered under the new system. So the thing boils down to a discriminatory policy to black activists. That is sad.
