I know, I've been telling you guys the old shire is coming back for about a year now but there hasn't been much to talk about yet... although they do have fencing now and heavy weapons... and, apparently archery... and they've been getting laurels and various awards... but it's all been very gradual. I think they've held one or two events or demos so far, from what I hear it went well, but the next event looks a lot more interesting. It's called, 'The Rebirth of the Blak Rose'. If you've been waiting to see if the shire has life in it to decide to get involved or not then this event should answer that question:

P.S. -- The Blak Rose web page is at http://rain.prohosting.com/~sca/. I got this announcement is from the mailing list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/blak_rose/. If you sign up for a free account you can see the mailing list archive. Signing up doesn't mean you have to get the emails, and I haven't gotten any spam from them so far (I've been on the list for over a year now).

Greetings, everyone!

Here's the announcement that's being sent to Pikestaff and the Royals. If I've missed anything, let me know, so I can correct and update.

Rebirth of the Blak Rose

Shire of Blak Rose

Harrisburg, Pa

October 19, 2002
We, the residents of the Shire of Blak Rose, having heard rumors throughout the kingdom of our demise, are here to announce that these rumors are untrue. While it is true that we have been dormant of late, we are here to assure you that this shire lives.

Many residents of the East Kingdom tell stories of ancient history, some remembering the times and trials of this shire's past. Our shire members wish to show that that is exactly what it is. the past. We have spent 3 years being dormant and are now ready to spring forth with growth, enthusiasm, and energy.

The event will hold forth interests for folk from all walks of life. We invite merchants to come and sell their wares. We have invited gentles to come and teach a wide range of arts, crafts, and martial abilities. Sewing, architecture, herbs, and anything else we can find knowledgeable teachers for. Perhaps you may even have a subject which you would like to present to others.

That the fighters may know that this shire still possesses a martial spirit, we have room, and prizes, set aside for both heavy weapons and rapier activities and classes. Authorizations will also be held. Let us not forget the archers; they, too, will have activities and classes.

Since many of our shire members are new to the SCA, as well as the shire, many of the activities will be oriented toward educating and introducing them to our Society. The introductory sewing class is planned as a make-and-wear T-tunic class. Introductory needlework, herb, fencing and even heavy weapons classes are in the works.

Simply stated, if you have new residents, or feel that you might benefit from this type of affair, then this is the event for you.

The head cook has decided to celebrate each of the cultures our shire officers represent. This way those of you who don't know us will learn through one of the best ways: food! Our seneschal and chatelaine are Scots, our herald, a Sephardic Jew, our exchequer, an early Hungarian, and our knight marshal, an Englishman of Saxon and Norse ancestry. Our feast will be a celebration of our diversity throughout the courses. The event handout will also hold both the recipes inspired, and a short history of the recipe, and officer, in attempt to help everyone become acquainted with us.

Come and help us celebrate the beginning of a new era in the Shire of Blak Rose.

The site is the Colonial Park United Methodist Church, 430 Colonial Rd., Harrisburg, PA 17109. It is completely handicap accessible, and has limited shower space for the fighters. The site opens at 0 a.m. and closes promptly at 10 p.m.

The price of the event is$12.00 for onboard and $10 for off-board; children under 12 are half price. We are currently limiting the seating to 80 onboard, so reserve early.

Send reservations to our exchequer, Darka Vadas (Andrea McCormicck, 3007 N. 4th St., Harrisburg, PA 17110, 717-234-7283 andreamcc@comcast.net). Remember the only true reservation is a paid one. For any food allergies, or concerns, contact the head cook, Lady Caitrina Gordon at (717) 583-2974 or KatyaSCAGordon@AOL.com.
