Ya know, since I've started in this game (albeit it hasn't been that long), I haven't seen a whole lot of combat or character death problems. While I realize that this may have been a problem in the past, it doesn't seem like it is a major problem anymore.
There has only been three character deaths in the five or six weeks that I've been playing and all were a direct result of the vampires doing something excessively stupid and attacking the Garou in a range close enough for them to close the distance. One vamp died in that battle and the other two got killed as a direct result.
If the aforementioned attack had not happened then I'm fairly sure we wouldn't have had any deaths since I've started.
I, personally, think the game is evolving into a new form which will avoid most of those old problems. The focusing on the single genre will also help this transition as it will focus things on political conflict rather than physical conflict.
Of course the transition will be greatly helped if we throw off the negative attitudes of the past, and operate under the brave assumption that people can improve and grow and that the old habits of some in the past are going to be discouraged with extreme prejudice.
