Most unusual 18 holes

Today, was the oddest game.

Looking forward to my game today. I went back swinging conventional this year after trying multiple different types of swings. I gave S&T about 8 months before I gave up on it. Going conventional felt like a great idea and I seemed to be doing so much better than I have for the past 7 years with all the different "odd" swing theories.

Well, I started off with 2 double bogeys, 3 bogeys, and one triple bogey. I just could not drive, hit my irons, chip, or putt. I thought "what the heck. I will switch back to Stack and Tilt to get thru this game. Can't be any worse than what I am doing." For the next 12 holes, I par-ed 10 of them. I ended up shooting a 87, which is close to my average score. I never hit that many pars in a stretch before.

My drives were good, and irons were absolutely on target. After getting on the green in regulation on the first hole going S&T, I thought "well, my putting has gone to crap. I might as well change that too." I started putting by just breaking my wrist. I have been goofing with this before but never on the course. I only 3 putted once for the 12 holes. And these greens are considered the toughest in the state; they are very slick. Putting by just breaking my wrists seems logical to me. Rather than moving your shoulder while everything else is still, I just break my wrist and kept everything still, especially my shoulders. Of course, I would get "eye rolls" from the short game experts.

Anyway, S&T worked great for me today. I honestly don't know what to do when I play again.

Stupid game.

You gotta love this crazy game

I've been experimenting too;my latest is my version of J.B. Holmes' swing. It's an upright swing (think Colin Montgomery)

I'm very pleased with my iron play and the driver is not far behind. Played last Sunday at the Golf Club of the Bluegrass, from the blue tees (about 6100 yards is my guess)and shot even par. Three under on the front with birdies on both par threes (125 yards over water and 143 yards.) On the back nine I had three bogeys, with a three putt on a par three. The course is not that difficult from that yardage.

Good scoring

Pretty decent scores, BobKy.

Okay. So, now you are going conventional. To balance it all out, perhaps I need to go back to S&T.

Driver issues and S&T is always a concern. I noticed my drives were pretty much on target. But I am still coming up 10-20 yards shorter than conventional. It is nice to be playing in the fairway, though.

Putting with a wrist hinge. In your humble opinion, what do you think of it? Funny thing is I also chipped with the wrist hinge and it worked very well. So, why do the experts agree you must putt with the shoulders and use them as a pivot but won't think it is a good idea using your wrists as the pivot point?

Today

Played a local public course from the back tees (6200 yards) and shot 76;even on the front with two birdies and four over on the back with one three putt.

I too use the slight wrist hinge for chipping;worked well for me today. I also think there are plenty of golfers in the 60's and 70's who used a wrist-based putting stroke. With the slow greens many of us face on public courses,it may still be the best way to putt!

Without some guidance (from a teacher or tapes) I would say that you will either have to live with the shorter drives or use another swing with the driver, while still using S&T for the irons.

I'm sticking to my "Tall and Straight" swing. It sure helps to eliminate those dreaded hooks.

Bob you obviously have excellent hand eye co-ordination and could play well with any swing. I follow your comments here and the other forums you post with interest. I've tried about every swing out there and breaking 90 is great for me. When I first took up golf I thought I'd be low 80s in a year.
It comes a lot easier for some. Believe my son would take right to golf but all he wants to do when off is water ski.
Take care and always enjoy reading your post Bob.

Bob, did you see the golf channel last night? Had playing lesson with a pro and the pro was J.B. Holmes. Do you know he purposely does not cock his wrist? So much for a lot of lag with the wrist to get distance.
