Problems with S400 air leak

Response to Straight Shooters Not so positive

William,
Lets try to see both sides here. You special ordered a 12 fpe Air Arms S400 .177 Classic. The name "special order" should have clued you in that Straight Shooters does not carry replacement rifles and you have would need to talk to the warranty center for any issues since this is where any repairs or replacements may be obtained. When you had the first leak we worked with you and Boris. He received the gun and charged it to verify the leak. Once he tested the rifle he contacted us and indicated the gun held air for him and he did not find any problems with the gun but would continue to keep it under pressure and keep an eye on it.

Now your rifle may or may not have had a problem to begin with. We test all pcp air rifles for air leaks before they ship and if they do not hold air here they do not ship to a customer. It is always possible that your rifle had a very slow leak that we did not notice or that it leaks at a specific air pressure or even that it developed a leak in transit. Again at this point we do not know what, if any problems exist. Just so everyone knows what a dealer or service center is faced with I currently have two rifles being tested for air leaks. Both rifles were returned by customers saying they leaked air. Now both of these rifles have been under pressure for about two weeks they have passed the water test nor have they lost any air just sitting under pressure. Who is correct the customer who was sure the rifle was leaking or me who has not seen any decrease in pressure in two weeks?

We have found many time a customer thinks a rifle is leaking if they are unaware that the air pressure in a rifle will settle down slightly as the air cools from the initial fill. This is the point when the air is very warm and the molecules are moving rapidly once the air cools and the molecules slow down and compact the pressure will drop slightly.

When your rifle was shipped from you to the warranty center it becomes his responsibility to ascertain the problem and fix or replace the gun but we always to be kept in the loop so we can help with problems if it becomes necessary. Boris contacted us right away when he received your rifle and indicated he was not seeing any pressure loss. He will have to speak for himself as to his testing procedures but logic would ask why would he send a gun back to a customer that obviously leaked in as short a span as 12 hours?

Now you have posted or your post has made it to at least two forums bad mouthing a dealer that; 1 - because of the time of day has not been able to contact the warranty center to see what his take on the issue is. 2 - has had no direct contact with the gun to gather any first hand knowledge of the issue. Everyone on the forums are relying on your information to form an opinion as to who is at fault for a problem that may or may not even exist.

You can certainly tell the world about how disappointed you are in our service but you should also tell them that, you had a special order rifle, you thought you had a problem and it was shipped to the service center where no problem was found. It was then shipped back to you and you again discovered the same problem.

At no time has Straight Shooters been directly in contact with the rifle since the original shipment. Straight Shooters must rely on the information from the customer and the service center and late on a Friday night is not the best time to obtain accurate information from a business but it seems to be a good time to ask advice of people who have not touched the rifle or have any other information other than what has been posted on the forums.

It seems a sensible person may wait to voice his displeasure with a situation until he sees exactly what that situation is.
