I went over to white pass/rimrock on tues(6/2/09)with my son and a friend and hunted for 6 hrs.It is in need of rain.One boleta edulas and about 8lbs of black morels.If no rain in the next few days the season will end because it is late by the flowers blooming.I seen no calipso orc. and the avalanch ly.are still blooming.Trillium is just up and blooming and mule ears are now just comming on above 3k ft.Grasses are just erupting in upper elevations above the lake and morels found were mostly fresh and few were old.The roads were dusty enough to require the windows rolled up,too.A bad sign for sure.My son is going to Blewett pass today and will call me from the pass as our cell phones now work in that area for the first time ever so I suspect they just put in a tower recently.It is strange to be picking mushrooms 2 miles from the pass and get a phone call from home.It was just dark at 9pm and I got a call from home and I was 2 miles behind the snow park at Blewett 10 days ago.There were still snow banks along the road and I found about 2 lbs of blacks @4500ft on the south facing slope.There was lots of snow melt water cascading down to the road and plenty of snow banks in every direction that I walked.I would suggest that someone in that area try the Scotty creek road,too as it runs parr.to the east of SR97 to the north and goes down to Shaser Creek as well.I once picked over 20# on a late yr as that area has more shaded areas that aren't so prone to burnout as quickly.The road connects to SR97 at the top of the pass as well as the old blewett town site.There is an old arrastra on sr97 with a historic sign and pull out.The old stamp mill is just off the highway(east side) and up that gulch where some of the old cable tower are still standing is a good area.Just be careful of holes and stay out of any of the tunnels that aren't full of water.That is a patented claim and someone owns that area but never have seen it posted.If you can hike you will find plenty of morels up the shaser creek rd up to Iron Top mt.I took mt bikes up once (7miles)all the way for Nigro Creek on a couple day trip.It is gated so you have to ether walk,ride a bike or small atv.I don't know if the atv is legal.The roads are pretty good but it is the only way to get back there as the bridge is washed out on Negro Creek on sr97 and the Peshastin creek is really roaring full at this time of yr.so wading isn't an option. |
