Went hunting thoroughly last weekend (end of April) and found only conifer morels. Bummed. Beautiful spot will likely produce soon though in that area: Manistee river trail east side in the sandy bottom pine groves. No secrets t/here. Will try Huron forest this weekend. (fingers crossed)
good luck!
Going out here by Holland, Muskegon and Hesperia for token looks this weekend. Next week after it warms up I will be looking in my spots by Ferry, Walkerville, Shelby, Hart and Ruby Creek Wed and Friday. The following weekend I am headed to YUMA HILLS on Thursday to hunt these elusive little rascal's. I have it figured if you find one don't make eye contact or they will run like the dickens. :-) Good luck to everyone
We've been checking spots that usually produce morels but haven't found any in Montcalm County yet (central michigan area) - Looks like everyone's finding them all around us, maybe we're being too noisy and scaring them off! :)
Checked one of my spots yesterday, nothing. Went to the same spot today, found a good couple of handfuls! I live in southwestern lower Michigan in Buchanan.
i live in se lower michigan by lake erie about 7 miles from ohio state line,i have a handful of little grey's i have found, but still no white's or yellow's,should i be finding the bigger ones right now or is it still a little to early?well i'll keep on checking my hot spot's,but i think that cold weather we got is gonna make them pop a little later than usuall,if u can give me any info that would be great.ty from lower mi!!oh and happy hunting,i hope everyone is blessed with lot's of shroom's this season.
I found 171 grays in Jackson and Hillsdale county yeasterday. Some were over a inch. Plan on going back out this evening to check a few more spots. They are here! Good luck to everyone!
found 6 blondes this morning in dowagiac michigan,,,,,,first of the season for me,,,,,good rains lately and warming up, still alittle cool at night but they are a comin......hoooooray.......not a lot but good for a little snack.....more to come in the weeks ahead i am sure......yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...........happy shroomin to all.......
Up around Glennie in the Huron National Forest this past weekend, had a good shower Saturday evening, and dreams of shroons on Sunday, but ended up doing a lot of walking and not a single mushroom. Even with the rain, the ground was still a bit too dry. The leeks are starting to pop everywhere, and should produce plenty of tasty treats from the forest. With the rains, the next few days will hopefully start producing some morels.
WENT TO mANISTEE LAST WEEKEND AND FOUND ONLY Conifer morels. Hoping this weekend to spot some edibles in your area along the Corsair trail area. Is this a decent spot as I am new to area?
thanks
I have Morels that pop up in my rustic front yard every spring. There are usually ony 1 to 5. Is there a way to encourage them to produce more? Thanks, Val, Oscoda
I wasn't sure if my 1st message posted since I didn't have an account. I get 1 to 5 morels in my front yard each spring. Always in the same spot. Is there some way to encourage them to produce more? Thanks, Val, Oscoda
I went out to take the trash out this morning and found 50 litle nubs coming out around and under the trash can. I live in town with no trees within 50' of that side of the house. Crazy crazy shrooms.
We went out this morning for about an hour and came back with one lonely black. Imagine our surprise when Tom and Barbie from STurgis, MI area just checked and said they had found nearly 15 pounds! ... unbelieveable. But we know its true 'cause they just laid them all out on the picnic table for a picture.
Found 102 so far but most have been pretty small. No whites yet. We are in Manchester, MI (about halfway between Ann Arbor and Jackson in the far s.w. corner of Washtenaw County).
We went out yesterday here in Milford, MI. I found 2 nice whites and about 18 greys! I wasn't sure if they grow in the burbs, but I guess no one looks there! Goin' out again today, I'm lovin' it!!
Hunted yesterday (SAT) in Kalamazoo County
and found 21 morels. Long hunt, pretty
dry, but we found a nice flush of 14 in
a honey-hole and 7 more here and there.
thanks for the article -yes, it helps me understand it better. I especially like the 6 to 1 ratio. its easy to just walk and walk and walk and think you are doing it right. I understand that you just need to "stop and smell the mushrooms" for longer periods of time. I will try to keep the 6 to 1 ratio in mind from now on!
I'm new to this website because I am planning on going to Luther, Michigan later this month and wanted to know how the hunting up there is going. I'm from Berrien Springs. Last week I found 5 yellows here. Not too good yet.
Does anyone know of any public parks in southern Michigan or any public places to go look for morel mushrooms. I have been struggling to find many in the private woods I have been looking in.
Todd, You may want to try Waterloo State Recreation area near Chelsea (just outside Ann Arbor). I usually hunt in Northern Michigan, but had been looking for somewhere closer to home (Monroe) to stomp around in and ended up going out there last weekend on a whim.
I'm glad I did! We found a pound and a half of blacks in about and hour or so. I can't really tell you where exactly to go, as it was my first time and I just drove around until I found a spot that I thought looked good. Look on the south-facing side of hills.
I love your phrase, "Stop and sell the
mushrooms." I'm going to use that!
Here in Kalamazoo County we are finding
some "blondes and greys" but we are hunting
for long periods, and actually averaging a
7:1 ratio. Man that's tough to do!
It's been getting slower though, in my
opinion due to the lack of rain.
Hi we found a few VERY small ones today after a couple hours searching. Thought with the rains the other day we'd find a bunch. My youngest son, one with the eagle eyes, found them. Also took the $5 prize for finding the first ones this year. I live in the milford area and always find it a challenge to figure out when they're coming in. Last year found very few but year before a bunch. Planning on going out again for a while on Saturday and will report back...if you're finding them would appreciate hearing it as I'd know to get back out. Locations we've been finding have been the standard story...dead/dying elms. That said the only consistent thing I've every found is they don't grow on concrete. Other than that I've given up guessing what they like as every year it seems to change!
Can anyone tell me how the mushrooms are coming along in Cadillac Michigan? We're to go up on the weekend of May 18. I just dont want to make the 4 to 6 hour trip for nothing.
Finally, after searching every couple days for the last 3 weeks we found a five really huge blondes last night Thursday 5/17/2007. Found them on private property outside Dansville, MI, which is in the middle of Ingham County.
Went to my great spot today before moving (to Florida) and the the boys were popping every where. I picked more than 60 in a hour and a half. I hate to see the shrooms go to waste and will not be around any more to pick the crop. So if youre in the Saginaw area hit Turner Road just noth of Cheasning at the R.R. tracts and to the south east. Hope someone out there will enjoy this area. I think they just started and I get great production for weeks.(take more than one bag) Good Luck
I found my very first Morels, last Sunday! My own little patch in northern Oakland County. I'd eaten them once before and loved them but not until this spring did I find out that they grow every where. I thought they were an up north Michigan thing. I did a lot of reading on line and have been in the woods every spare minute for the past three weeks and there they where almost in town. Just what I needed a reason to be in the woods other than hunting season!
Yesterday I received a large bucket full of beautiful, large morel's from the Decatur, MI area (near Paw Paw). The folks that located them told me that they found enough to fill 2 huge boxes full of those little buggers in about 15-20 minutes. I thought it was starting to look like I lost out on this year's crop of the Morel's... but not so... I got my butter, flour, salt and frying pan ready to give these guys a nice little cookin'.
I've found about 50 grey and blacks and about 40 yellows total in the last week. yellows in the past four days. They are out there!!! Mostly around ash trees.
