Hey everybody! I'm just outside Anderson and found a few pecker heads and 2 grays yesterday. I'll be looking everyday after work and ALL day on weekends. I just moved up here from TN. I'd hunt during morel time down there, then plan my weeks vacation a month later to come up here. It's usually a month between TN morels and IN morels. I think next weekend is going to be the start of the big finds! Hope to hear from some of you. Cinda

Helo fellow shroomers....
I found at least a dozen and a half yesterday afternoon. all blacks, all very small right now. About the size of two peas stacked on top of one another. I'll be watching them grow to size. Habitat is deciduous woodland, but the shrrom are actually on the border, and out into the grass a bit. FYI. Be well and good luck.

Oh yeah, sorry, I'm in Lagrange County, Indiana. Thats in the north east corner of the state. Soil is moist but not wet. Its been cold but warming the last few days. Mayapples are just beginning to open the buds. and by the way, we have had several late freezes and it doesnt seemed to have harmed the mushrooms. Be well and good luck all.

Gray morels

April 28 2007, 6:17 PM

If you read and believe what is on the Great Mushroom page, some believe the grays are immature yellows. Might I suggest studying a sample but covering 2 or 3 with a glass jar and watching the change in them. Then let us know.

My experience is the bigfoot Escalanta is the last of the season. Grays are earlier in my area (15 mi.north of I-70 at IL/IN state line). Progression in my area is - blacks, half-free, grays/yellows, deliciousa, Escalanta.

May 8 found some..

May 11 2007, 2:06 PM

Found 2 lbs. of mixed gray and somewhat large yellows that were a little old in a spot where they were never seen before, although the grays were very fresh. Under a dying oak tree and a healthy silver maple about 12" dia. They were spread out about 30 yards around both trees. A total of 32 were picked to yield 2 lbs. The largest yellow was close to 6" tall and the smallest gray was around 1 1/2" tall. It was very unusual to see both varieties that close together, in my experience.. These were located in NE Indiana, Noble county.

April Morels 2008

April 17 2008, 1:17 PM

Hi Bert,
Just read the email letter you send to me,thanks for corresponding in our orels search 2008.
I have a nephew that lives in Chesterton also, finds alot of them morels in the backyard where they live.
His name is Robbie but cantr remember the nickname for his roon title.
But yes I can say Bert that the calumet river ares along side the banks go for it plentiful last year.If you see a fence ok just kind of walk alittle down from your spot to see that its not posted rather if so you jnow what you know.
I went inside one area fenced in last year and boy did those Morels spruces up to me .It looked like they were saying something nice to me,like hurrah we are found.I got around a bsket full that year 2007 april 21st,so i can only tell you to search those little elm tress alont parks sides and wooden area and river banks too. also railroad tracks got alot one year ago and over the hill i could not believe what i saw.Cant say where but your from chesterton and first time out you said. If I tell you more than Im a foolk.but good luck and do respnd back Bert.Good roon hunting

Any Luck In Idiana

April 17 2008, 1:28 PM

Hi Adam,
Just got to your responded email on forum, thanks for responding.
Keep those eye close to the ground man,I was told the best way to hunt them is too have a long sort of heavy stick and good eyes. But too, what i do is when i think or feel for them morel in areas,I'lll stop.,look bend down take the stick move leaves out and feel soil thats the better methods that i know. And they woirk great, all morels hunters do that. Its like a lesson to be taught right!
But Elm tree are the best and pines also depending the area your in,i have been involved in norels over 20 yrs now and havent had a bad yr yet.Sandin area are also good by water, you just never know Adam.
Lets say you find one by a bush ok stop, look around usually trhere be a scount within 10-30 feet area look good, because they do say a scount is usually the very first morel to be found and always there plenty near by 10-30 feet ok.no lie either.a scount is very important and good sighting for you in the areas that it was spotted.,Adam.
Good Roon Hunting bud
Im out in a few days here in the north part of INdiana Portage,Valporasio Michigan Lake areas.good all around for us here, but i rather be in Michigan looking there in afew weeks thats the spot where they grow bigger that your hands.
best to you Adam.
