When to start looking in Georgia?

Hi, I live north of Atlanta and was wondering when to start looking (and where). We have a very wooded backyard, and I"m going to start there.

Anytime now. Once it rains wait a day or two then head to the woods. Start out checking along creeks and around the elm/ash trees. Take note of any dead elm trees. Those are where I have the most luck. If you follow a creek check on both sides on the bank/creekbed walls, in the leaves etc. If your in woods that have no creek you need to find low spots, ones around dead trees. Remember too that just because you dont see elm trees it is not certain there will be no morels. Also make sure you always use a netted potato sack or something like it so the spores from the mushrooms you pick will be dropped throughout the woods and help with production of future morels.. Goodluck.

Nothing yet, but I keep hoping

Walked the woods the other evening, didn't spot anything. Though the cat kept getting lost. He's so pitiful, would meow loudly until we went back and got him (some part bobcat I have) Not taking him next time. Wonder if I could teach my dog to sniff out morels? Oh well, have to find some first.

Anyone from the Atlanta area here?

Just to let you know, deer eat morels big time, so if your in an area with a large amount of deer keep that in mind.

Well, sadly, we're still under drought conditions, so hopefully if I do by some miracle have morels in the woods (lots of other mushrooms) they will come up this year. Went for a walk again this afternoon, nothing. At least the cat didn't get lost.

I try to follow the 'deer trails' back there, so as not to stomp the undergrowth. Have even taken to carrying a pair of snips so I can trim the edges of the path (poor hubbie always gets tangled in something) Have realized we have lots of nifty native plants back there. Need to learn all the names. Just signed up with the Georgia native plant society too for plant rescues and such. It'll be a fun way to learn the native plants, and to increase what's in our garden.

Started a garden blog this year, and have some images of the mushies that I've found out in the woods so far (we do have a little stream, it's so nice) Thought y'all might like to see..

Morels in GA!

March 13 2008, 8:47 AM

Chris Matherly and another shroom hunter have listed March 10-11 morel findings in GA on morelmushroomhunter.com! The reports are from Baldwin and Bibb counties. It looks like the beautiful yellows and grays are already popping in spots! Good luck!

Those counties are way south of us. (live North of Atlanta). Sadly, we probably don't have any morels in the backyard. It's raining this weekend, so I'll look again on Sunday. Maybe try some of the nearby woods too.
