I recently moved to western NC. I have been searching for morels for about two weeks, with no luck yet.
I have talked to several locals, and no one seems to have heard of morel mushrooms, let alone eating a mushroom. Has anyone heard of finding morels in this area? I live in the foothills of the Smoky mtns., Southern Burke County. Between Hickory and Morganton. Lots of hardwoods and pines, creek bottoms. Looks like the right kind of area. I will just keep looking. Gives me an excuse to wander the woods. Any info regarding this area would be appreciated.

I am not sure where abouts you are. I did visit N. Carolina and went looking for Morels. I look every I go in the Spring ( From NJ). My brother informed my of an old apple orchard and of course i checked it out, Low and behold I found some, not alot but at least 25 of them. So i ventured to a park and found a few more. It was in Elk Park NC. So if you are in that area, might want to do some hunting there. I was there for only a few days but know that I could of found more if I had a longer stay. If you can do some research and look into old apple orchards thats a plus. good luck.
Thanks for your response. I do know of an old apple orchard not far from where I live. I will check it out. Still nothing in the woods or parks that I have found. Had a little rain over the weekend, now sunny and warming up, so maybe conditions have improved. Will continue to look, and will post my results later.
Good luck all.
