Well it depends on whether the land owner is ok with having someone wandering around on their property or not. Sometimes if you go to a home and ask, they will give you permission. Sometimes they will say they would rather you didnt go on their property. Just depends. I suggest you try some of the local parks with access to woods for a starter. Or some Government property. We used to have a sweet spot in Kalamazoo, only the Company that owned the property closed it off and said we cant go back there now, due to too much dumping of garbage on the land. Was a great spot too, we found Caps, and Morels up the yin-yang all the time in there. Now Im looking for a new spot as well. Just try asking at a few houses and see if they will allow it. If no luck, go to the parks that have woods around them. Thats what we are doing.
I live in northern mich on a large piece of property (250 acres) in an area with hundreds of acres of state and federal land available to everyone. I have a problem with the trespassing that we have to deal with every spring. If someone were to ask permission to hunt morels on our property I would have to refuse but I do know of numerous spots on public property (where I also hunt mushrooms) and I would definately help people locate these places. Just please get a map showing state and federal lands and ask permission.
I understand how you feel about tresspassers, we also own 160 acres in Indiana, and we have to contend with the tresspassers. Just today, while loggers were cutting trees, a tree almost fell on 2 tresspassers.
Thanks for the info, I plan on checking the public land.
Thanks again
