still cold

April 29 2008, 2:13 PM

I have seen this weather in the past mess up the morel season in the cascades. There is so much snow that by the time it melts off the weather gets extremely hot, atoo fast.I would look to the north slope in the event that this happens. In years like this it pays to keep keep the snow banks within eye site, too. The cooling effect of the snow keeps the ground from getting to hot as well as providing moisture. Now there will be other types of mushrooms that like this type of conditions so keep your eyes open.King boletes of various var. are always welcome at the table.I have made more per lb for boletes than I ever got for morels. The best price I have ever got for morels is $10 lb and I once got $17 for morels. They were #1s and I only had about 20lbs.Still a good price and paid for the gas. That is an issue this yr.I will planning my trips with care and will have to take as many of my friend that will go to defray the cost of fuel.I go hunting from from south and east of white pass to north of winthrop so I do like to roam. The tripod fire of last yr will have somemore morels comming up come late may to sept again.I like to go from mission ridge to blewett pass when the snow will allow it.I have seen snow not come off the old blewett pass road on the north side til the end of july and lion rock on the east side of the road, too. It is a heavy snow yr and they were getting snow on the higher passes just this last wkend.Patients.Repeat and cook up some dried morels with a bechame sauce and serve them over a nice venison steak.Goodday.

Morels found on the Farm

April 26 2008, 7:46 PM

I found a dozen small blacks while weeding in the herb bed. We have never had morels on our farm until now. We put straw around the herbs as a mulch. Guess staw has other benefits!
