Hey there, I'm a DeWitt native currently living in the Iowa QC's. I've been waiting for the perfect moment too and was also thinking of hunting this weekend. Have you ever found any in Westbrook park? I have a spot out by Grand Mound that is usually a good place to look. I think we may have some this weekend but my best would be on first weekend in May.

That's the one...I've looked there in the past but no luck. I know the name Waack but don't know anyone personally. I was a Tague before I got married (CHS class of 01'). I think I will go looking next weekend and maybe the weekend after depending on how things turn out at first. Last year was sucky where I looked, but the weather was to blame. Not this year, unless the neighbors grab em' first, we'll be ready.

I think we're in for a late late morel season. There has been very little activity around this area and the hot spots are not seeing hardly any, if any morels yet. I truly don't think we've had enough warm days yet. Remember, it only started getting above the 40's a couple weeks ago. We stayed in the cold spell for quite awhile. Don't give up hope, they will come. I'm thinking the first week of May up until Mother's Day will be prime time. Most of the reports coming in near the QC area are reports of tiny mushrooms, no yellows yet. I'd give it another week, but don't give up hope, looking early and often is key.

This impending doom of a frost is creeping me out. It is so cold and windy and nasty today, it's more like February than April, LATE APRIL! Curse you global warming! I am hoping we can recover from this, it seems that Iowa (besides FORT MADISON apparently) is about the only state that has gotten the shaft regarding the morels.

Seth, ha! We were out at SCP too! Found 5 also and then it got too dark. You didn't happen to be in a white pickup were you? Buzzsaw from Morels.com got 271 today...271!!! He is pulling in hundreds a day...no wonder there is always holes. My husband and I are going to go back early next week at sunrise before work and look again. That's the only way I think it's going to happen. It's almost irritating hearing about people getting truckload after truckload and leaving a handful for the rest but I guess finders keepers huh?

Found first smalll greys and 2 to 3 inch yellows on friday may 2 west of Maquoketa didn't pick. Expecting rain next day. After rain on sat. went to another old spot that's been good in the past but not for a couple of years. It has a strong southern exposure. I found a real nice patch of yellows 4 to 5 inches those I picked. Still eating those tonight. Scouted on Sunday found lots of little ones. Didn't pick any! Found one group of 9 but didn't pick. Expecting rain on tomarrow (Tuesday). Went to another spot tonight that hasn't been good for 3 or 4 years. Picked enough for a meal, left the small ones, more rain tomarrow (Tues). Could be a very good year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I was in a hurry.

I got folks living in Thomson and I haven't heard how the crop is doing as of the 4th and 5th. Got rain today in Dekalb county so I'm hoping it rained some out there around Thomson and Savanna. Gonna try to hit a few areas around Savanna and Clinton. Good luck.

I have found a couple lbs. in the Iowa City area. Not yellows or grey's yet but, the half free kind and some black morels. That is a good indicator that there should be grey's and yellows there already. Unfortunatley I have been in Arkansas since May 5th. Hopefully it will be prime time when I get back. Plan on stopping in MO on the way up to see if there is anything left there.

pop or grow

May 9 2008, 9:57 AM

Let me know if the little ones you found grew any. I would like to know the truth about if they grow or pop.

Common sense would say they grow as all plants do. But experience tells me they pop and that's it. I've checked areas before where I will find a few small ones, and nothing else there, it'll rain that night I'll go out there the next day and find more and they are usually larger and were definitely not there the day before.

If they grow how do you account for finding small dried up greys and yellows when fresh ones are up in other parts of the timber??

yes they do grow the ones i have left have doubled over the last two days or better i was getting worried that some of the looked dried out, and had decided to pick them the next day, then we got about a thnth inch of rain now the dont look dried out and are some of the biggest ones there. all told i have counted and am watching about over 100 with new one poppin out the ground everyday GROW GROW GROW
