found first few greys along platte in sarpy county last thursday, a few more on saturday, and more on monday, today there were many more, found some good numbers of yellows and greys bunched up, but we need more rain and some more heat, starting to get dry, there was growth on these over the weekend, even during the cold weather
found 90 today, most grays but some small yellows also. They were small over-all, and very specific to certain areas of a large timber zone that "seems" all the same. But I know better! (mwahahaha!).
/Omaha area
We have been all over near the MO river, along the banks and thru the woods, but have yet to find one. None to be found in the spots of last year. Any more specific imfo would be great. Thanks.
I know it's really early, but with this spring like weather the mind start to turn toward shoomin'. I now live in Lincoln and would like to know places around to go Morel hunting. Thanks
Went and checked all 13 spots, and not a single one, i did notice a few days ago that the beefheads, poisionous ones were out for 2 days, last year found a bunch of morels by those... cold weather has put a damper in this season. will give it about another week or so for searching.

I think its a bit early yet, I would wait 2 more weeks. My agenda is 3 weeks then its go time. Sandy river bottoms, like the Platte river, have good early yields. Im not expecting anything good till bout turn of May give or take conditions.
/ hints
// look for dying trees, or trees with storm damage from last summer.
/// rotting tree stumps. The more the stump comes above ground, the better. Its
like a mushroom beacon. Stumps rotted into the ground, and with good shading, produce
massive shrooms! In the late stage.
//// find shrooms, and follow the terrain line, there will be more!
Sorry to double post, but be aware, especially if you are an early starter, in the SE
Nebraska area at least, of tics. I got bit last year, and the year before, but not hunting.
And its no joke folks. My bites were not of the severe illness type, but the bacteria
and what not in these things, will eat holes into your body.
Early hunting will expose you to the rain effect, as in tics raining from the trees.
Tuck your socks outside your pant legs.whatever it takes , trust me.
// happy hunting!
Note from the Great Morel:
For more information on ticks, check out the homemade solution at the bottom of the Info and Links page. As Garatron stated above, if you are in an area where ticks are, make sure to take preventive measures.

Thanks for the info! I based my initial hunt on the Accu-weather forecast of mid-70s. Alas the weather forecast has changed...again. And I really appreciate the tick info, I just heard that So. Dakota is having a severe problem and that NE needs to be on the look out.
The best thing to avoid ticks is not wear bright colored clothes. Wear rubber boots with your pant legs out side of them with heavy rubber bands around them in a couple places like an inch apart from each other.Use plenty of deep woods off on the outside of your boots and clothes
Permetherin, buy it at walmart, follow directions, youll never pick another tick. Haven't seen one on me in over 8 years. Now if i can just avoid the ivy!!! mivame...
I went to the South Walmart in the hunting section and they had never heard of it. I did find something in the pet section for the yard that contained 2.5% permetherin. Wilderness Park was loaded with ticks,
Looks like the season is early by a couple of weeks and the forecast looks stunning -weather in Lincoln 80's by Wednesday, I will be out and about this weekend. Thanks for all of the advice!
Just went out this morning and picked up 10 big ones. I wish I could post pictures on this site.

Unfortunately, posting images is not permitted. After having someone attempt to post pornographic material, The Great Morel decided quickly to turn off this capability. It is unfortunate that the great shroomers who visit here cannot show off their prize, but hopes everyone understands.
I was around Nebraska City. For the Mushroom Festival, it's a fantastic place for beginners(me)very friendly, informative & the money raised ($10 donation)goes to the American Cancer Soc.
Ok, closer to the river makes sense. I'm originally from a small town about 15 miles from Nebraska City. I checked my guaranteed spot there on Saturday and they werent up yet. I think this week is probably the time to really start looking.
Mike,
I've been out for the last two days and I haven't found anything yet either. I think after the next couple days of rain and it warms up a bit we'll be in business.

Hi Katie,
I'm from the Lincoln area and recently bought a house in Ceresco, I went out to a few areas around Branched Oak Lake that have always produced over the years and found mushrooms, but not morels,I believe it's just not warm enough yet. The sun is out today and it will warm somewhat but the evening temps are still a little low. I love the feeling of excitement this time of year hunting for the first find. I've also gotten some wonderful photos, I found a nest of baby racoons in an old tree, sure wish we could still post photos, too bad some individuals have to ruin it for us all. P.S. I have also used the Permetherin from WalMart for years and I haven't had problems with any ticks. As any good morel hunter knows there are times when we are on hands and knees under bushes and in the thick of it, so I highly recommend it. Good Luck:)
Found about 2 pounds today out at DeSoto Bend but you have to look hard because they're pretty difficult to see right now and some of the larger ones are a bit dried out. About another week and the big boys will be up and ripe for the picking.
Found 7 last Friday, smaller ones, on Monday found one as big as my fist, but all have been on southern slopes with a lot of sun. Today went out and found more yellow and greys, getting bigger with the rain but really need a warm day or two to really make them pop! At least I have enough for supper every night. I'm in the Fremont area
I went out today and found several yellows and greys(2lbs). At first I didn't find any but then I tried a place that has produced for the past 6 years and lo and behold big beautiful grey's and yellows. I was suprised because usually the grey's are up first. There were alot of grey's, but many were very small, so I left them to get bigger. Unfortunately, some individuals will pick them at any size. I'm going to try along the platte river early tomorrow morning if it's not raining cats and dogs and will report back. The ticks weren't quite as bad as I would have expected. I did have some crawling on me when I was on the groung but I don't believe I had too many falling from the trees or crawling on me from the surrounding brush as I would have expected, maybe it was because of the water dripping off everthing from the rain and humidity. All I know is that it's GO Time!! Good Luck To All:) Sorry about the double post but I'm figuring out the process.
I hunt the Missouri river bottom, they are out for sure. I found one seven inches tall and three inches wide. I have been finding them since Sunday the 26th and that is the biggest one so far, it seems like we are in for a late season as last year I found my first one on 4-14-2008.
Found four nice bags of greys and yellows today around Enders Res. SW NE. Had to really search though. Temp in the upper 50's. Might have to have some friends over to help eat them all. Going back next weekend for more. Good luck to all!
Got skunked again yesterday. Looked for a solid three hours too. The only thing I found was a ton of ticks. If anyone around Lincoln is selling them let me know.
Check the Journal Star Classified for the next week or two for morel sales. I've seen them there for the last couple of year. I'm going to try Wilderness park again (without the dog this time) Wednesday/Thursday (weather's suppose to be back up into the 80% after Monday/Tuesday rains. Best of Luck!
It was my first time to Wilderness park, we saw some mushrooms, but no morels. I also took my dog with me for the walk and thanks be to God, I put his Frontline Flea & Tick repellent on him that morning.
Seems to be a late season. Just starting to find them in the bluffs in the SW Iowa, (Council Bluffs) area. Just got back from the hunt today with 4.5 pounds of large greys. It was like a line drawn at the bottom of the hills. On the sides that faced to the north, nothing. On the hillsides that face to the south we were finding them in groups. One group was 30 and another was 55. They are all fresh. Hoping that in another week or so the north facing slopes will start producing. In my humble opinion, we have another 2 good weeks of hunting in the hills. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!
