North of Winterset

May 5 2008, 1:09 PM

Last weekend my wife and I drove back to Ames via Winterset. Somewhere North of Winterset we stumbled upon a lake and a lot of public hunting ground. I do not know the name of the lake, however we only had to travel five minutes North, and a little west, to get to VanMeter. If you can find this lake there is excellent spots to hunt, many prime dead elms, on the west side of this mystery lake.

Sincerely,

Jeff

The name of the park is Badger Creek State Park. If you check out the map you will find it. Go in from the west. You will end at the water and a boat ramp. If you park down there you just need to head south into the timber. It is miserably thick for the first hundred feet. Search for the dead elms and, provided that they haven't been hunted, there should be morels there for you to pick. Shoot me an email if you would like any other information.

Happy Hunting,

Jeff
