None yet in Prior Lake

May 8 2008, 4:01 PM

I was out a bit yesterday and didn't see any yet. I am in the southwest suburbs on Minneapolis. The Lilacs are just starting to leaf out and I think we're another 5-7 days away from some activity. Atleast we're finally getting some more moderate temps that should help. It was a long tough winter (it snowed in May for cripes sake...) But it won't be too long!!

morels r up in dakota country

May 15 2008, 9:49 AM

5 14was out last eve to a promising spot i was at 7 days ago n nada went last eve nfound at least 2 dozen!! this area is atthe bottom of a small hill the hill faces due west. this area is very open with a triangle of 3 dead elms roughly 30 by 30 by 3o. bark is sloughing off of all 3 elms. light thickets of thorny plants scattered throughout. plenty of nice healthy moss patches. 1st elm nada 2nd elm took me a few minutes to spot a half inch gray poking its beautiful tiny head up out of the moss then afew more minutes to spot his baby brother. moved on to the 3rd elm so i wouldnt be squashing any future meals. 30 feet west of this 3rd elm is a pond of an acre or so. ground cover same as other elms except that on west side of this elm (18 incher by the way) quack grass was growing to within 7 feet of elm. as soon as i got within several feet of this elm i could see em all over!!!!! HOORAY!!!! many of you know what a rush this is!! didnt even have to get low to see them due to the patches of moss. tiptoed my way around to the west side of elm n in the quack grass several 2 n a half to 3 n a half inch grays. a few of the largest were allready starting to dry out. harvested 8. chkd out 2 or 3 more known producing spots n nada. these spots are heavily wooded thou so wasnt 2 bummed. on my way out stopped at afew open dead elm clumps n last clump found another half incher. southern side of a slope mostly open damn near dark at this last spot so reluctantly headed home i will damn well be back ASAP. pardon my analness in this report thougt particulars might b of some help to yous all.

Still looking in IGH

May 29 2008, 10:29 AM

I am in Inver Grove Heights (just south of Saint Paul), have been out looking regularly, and have not found any yet this year. Anyone in the metro area having any luck yet?

Last year, when the wild violets and lilacs were blooming is when I found them; this is about the right time for those two plants, but no morels yet :(

I found a few yesterday at Hidden Greens golf course while looking in the woods for my ball. I have been looking in Goodhue County and haven't found any yet, but I may not be looking in the right places because I know of people that have found them in Goodhue County.

Re: MINNESOTA "ON DECK"

I'm in Hennepin County and looking for those delicious mushrooms that a DNR friend of mine showed me. I have never had a successful hunt and I am AMAZED at some pictures I'm seeing of good hauls. Its expected to rain this weekend. Can someone give me some pointers? I'd like to find at least one patch this year, or I'll just have to wait till next year.

If you can find dead elm trees you will find morels, that and picking the right day.
Watch the message boards to see when people are doing well ... then head out to the dead elms!
You can spot a dead elm it will have loose falling bark that is dark red/orange on the inside,
also the dried sticks/brush on the dead treetop bend inward so the treetop may have the shape of a teardrop.
Search slowly and if you find one their ought to be more near by ... good luck pickin!

its still alittle early around the t.c. metro area though last year they were up by 4/29 1-2"grays but last year was an unusually early springive been out a lot the past two weeks and nada. i go 2 regional parks n walk the trails looking for stands of dead elms with the bark sloughing off. last 2 years that strategy has worked great for me.the west n south slopes should produce 1st.once you find a nice stand of dead elms get down low to the ground n look on n near the patches of moss they r much easier to spot on moss than on leaf litter.once the majority of dandelions start going to seed is when the big yellows should start to come up .a sincere offering n or prayer to the forrest spirits would,nt hurt either. dont get discouraged ngive up if no luck rite away. you have to hunt morels to learn to hunt morels!!

SE Minnesota morels

May 10 2008, 9:24 AM

I have been out two times this past week at some spots that have always been good in the past and I haven't seen anything yet. I have noticed when the leeks are about 6 to 8 inches above the ground that the mushrooms aren't far behind. Almost there! Can't wait.

THIS IS THE WEEK TO LOOK

May 10 2008, 9:26 PM

TOMORROW I AM GOING BACK TO MY SPOT...I BET AFTER THE RAIN WHICH I BELIEVE IS PERFECT FOR THE SEASON, I WILL SEE IF THERE ARE ANY IMPROVEMENTS ON THE SIZE OF THE HEADS. I WOULD BE SEARCHING ON SOUTH AND EAST FACING SLOPS. THE DEAD ELM IS A GREAT PLACE TO START. MOSS IS A BIG PART OF MOISTURE IN THE SOIL. I THINK THAT THE WARMER THE AREA THE BETTER. I LIKE TO KEEP IN MIND THE MICRO ECOSYSTEM. TO ME THAT IS WHERE THE SLOPE IS WARM OR IS SHOWING SIGNS OF BEING AHEAD OF OTHER AREAS IN TERMS OF TEMP. IF THE GROUND ON LEVEL SPOTS ARE WET GO TO HIGHER GROUND. LAST YEAR ON THE 8TH I WAS ABLE TO SEE THE SHROOMS GO UP THE SLOPE THRU THE 15TH. ALL I KNOW IS GET OUT AND LOOK HARD, SOON YOU WILL BE ABLE TO TELL WHERE THEY SHOULD BE JUST BY WALKING ON THE GROUND. SOFT HARD ETC. WE NEED MOISTURE AND THEN SUN WARM DAYS...CHECK BACK HERE AND I'LL LET YOU KNOW IF MY PATCH IS SPREADING.....GOOD LUCK!

SE Minnesota - Wabasha County

May 12 2008, 10:16 PM

Found 37 over the weekend, but worked hard to find them. Found all of them on the same south facing slope when we first started (sunny and few trees). About 12 of them were in the same spot, but the rest were only 1 or 2 at a time. Didn't find any more over the next 6 hours of looking. We won't be able to get out again for about 2 weeks - hoping that will be perfect timing and not too late.

May 13 2008, 11:21 PM

Thanks for the update on the morels in Wabasha. I live near Rochester and have only found one lone grey thus far that I could tell just popped. I think this next two weeks will be ready to roll here in SE MN. Hope you find some more. :)

Re: MINNESOTA "ON DECK"

I am within walking distance of Elm Creek Park and Ive been foraging around there. I have been looking in three main places, two are by the creek and the other is in a stand of trees in the U of the creek's passing. Should I be looking on higher ground? Its hard to find stands of elms, despite the fact its Elm Creek. I find myself in groves of birch or thorn bushes scattered with evergreens.

Savage Shrooms

May 14 2008, 11:20 AM

Missy, We also live in Savage... We have had good luck the past several years at a couple locations very close to you. One in Prior Lake and also down by the bike trails along the Minnesota River not too far from the 169 bridge that crosses the river. Have you ever tried Murphy Hanrehan park? Good Luck!

Becareful!!

May 13 2008, 3:18 PM

Last year we went out into The Three Rivers Park district and a cop came up to use and asked what we were doing. We were honest and said looking for Morel's then he said... Do you have any? We said no... He said GOOD, because I would have to take them because it's illegal to look for Morel's in state parks... he said you can not take anything OUT of a state park, and he also said we would have been fined as well as LOST our SHROOMS, so if you see a Park Ranger or something (hide your stash)!

May 13 2008, 4:29 PM

You can't take any plants. Mushrooms are legal.Tell the cop they are Fungi. Call the DNR and check. They don't encourage it, but it is legal.I pick morels in State Parks. They should spend more time in Botany 101 then on the gun range.

ILL CHECK IN AGAIN ON WEDS..KEEP LOOKING...OH BY THE WAY,WHEN THE ELM IS JUST ABOUT TO LOOSE THE BARK IS WHEN THE MORELS APPEAR. I HAVE A GOOD FRIEND THE CUT DOWN A GIANT TREE, 60 YEARS OLD...AN ELM AND HAULED IT AWAY...TODAY HE CALLED ME AND SAID THAT HE HARVESTED OVER 30 OF THEM ON THAT SPOT RIGHT IN HIS YARD....IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE IF HE IS ABLE TO GET THEM NEXT YEAR ON THAT SPOT. GOOD LUCK. GET OUT AND LOOK...... YOU CAN'T FIND THEM SITTING HERE READING THIS STUFF... LOL... SIGNED, RICE CO. MUSHROOMTASTIC

Re: Not so!

May 13 2008, 11:22 PM

Morel Mike I think your on the right page. They need to be educated in what mushroom are. I have stopped and ask at the park and state forest. I have had no trouble with them. EVEN IN CO.
I hope it's worth the gas to drive over Friday to the Mississippi. I'll be North of Winona. Private land this time.
I have enjoyed reading the info on this form. Way to go for the ones that have started this :) and THANK YOU

Still out there in MN

May 31 2008, 10:12 AM

I went out last weekend and found some pretty nice ones over 3" but not more than 20 or so. They were still mostly the grays so I am encouraged that they yellows will come yet. I am going to head out to my spots one last time after this nice down pour yesterday. I am in SE Minnesota so I would assume that the rest of the state should find a few more yet. Happy hunting and keep the reports coming if any one finds more.
