Found 25 black morels of various sizes, and about 10 small yellows at low altitude near Sheridan, Wyoming, yesterday evening (5/12/08). Last time I looked was a week ago, and saw none. A bit slower here this year due to cool temps. Last year was about a week earlier, and the year before about a week and a half earlier. Temps over the last week have been in the 30s most nights. Saw a bunch of oysters that have been frostbit, but the morels are fine- maybe insulated by the grass better? Well, a cool spring has made for some great powder skiing in May, so I definitely can't complain.
Hey I live in Sheridan and have no idea where to look. I know you are never supposed to give the location of your find, mushroom voodoo! When you found them was it by a creek or river? If you would just give me some generic details to help me out, this is my first time ever tryin to find them. Thank you!
I would really watch the Red Grade Burn over the next few weeks, especially in the bottom of the Little Goose canyon, if you can get permission (I think that is private). Hope that helps- sorry, I can't tell you my mother lode spots!
I UNDERSTAND YOU CAN'T TELL ME YOUR SPOT BUT I WAS WONDERING DID YOU FIND THEM AROUND CREEK AREAS OR IN FOREST AREAS? I WOULDN'T WANT YOU TO GIVE YOUR SPOTS I KNOW THAT I WOULDN'T EITHER. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME...DENA
Hey drifter, have you found anymore? I am new at this can you give a general idea where you are finding the morels. I have looked for several days and come up empty. I have found quite a bit of asparagus but not mushrooms. I need a little guidance! Thank you!
Yum, lots of asparagus is nothing to scoff at! At my favorite spot at low altitude, the blacks were definitely done last weekend. Found about 150 medium yellows May 17-18. Yellows have matured, and I would expect would be too old to pick by now. If we get some rain (we are supposed to), it would probably sprout another crop. I may try to look at a spot at slightly higher elevation in the east-central portion of the state if I can talk my co-workers into taking a roundabout way home. Little Goose Canyon might do good this year following the burn, but next year will probably be better.
Oh yeah, if you are finding asparagus, that pretty much means you are looking in the right areas for morels. Morels don't like heavy groundlayer vegetation though (whether along creeks or in the mixed-conifer forest). Morels like sun, so look for openings in trees with good sun, decaying organics, and good water (especially recent rainfall).
Also, don't bother looking where cattle have been recently grazed. I don't know why (acidic poo?), but I have never found morels where cattle graze, even in otherwise excellent habitat.
Hey D, they are still coming up. Found about 75 yellows, and a few greys and very late blacks at my favorite spot over the weekend. Also, found some in Sheridan, by Kendrick Park. Don't give up looking yet!
Hey thanks for the heads up! I was at Kendrick park last week during my lunch break walking up the wooden path looking, but no luck. I guess I will just keep trying...thank you so much for the information
I know you probably just love those morels, but I had a great idea. I am really struggling with the fact that I can not find any. If you happen to come across some maybe just a few in an area, maybe you could leave them and tell me where they are so I know where to look and what to look for. We have had enough stinking rain you think I would be able to find something. I guess I did find a shaggy mane..anyway I think that is what it was. I did not eat it of course, but I brought it home and investigated! Again thank you for the information! Wish it would dry out just a bit so we could go up Red Grade!
No problem, will do. I would look along the creek bank (don't fall in!), in shorter grass, but not where it looks mowed or sprayed. I was planning to check there, but haven't had time. I was the same way when I first started mushroom hunting. It just takes patience and persistence. After all, if they were easy to find, it wouldn't be as much fun! P.S., I think we might pick off the same asparagus patch, as someone was there ahead of me last weekend.
That is funny about the asparagus! I honestly don't pick if I see somebody else has been picking. We go out to the canyon to pick sometimes but I can't even see where it has came up, it does not even look like anybody has been picking it. We have spotted a few along the creek by Thorne Rider. Hope that is not your spot. If it is no big deal, my inlaws grow a bunch, we will just get some from them. Its just fun to get out of the house! I will check by the creek..yeah don't want to fall in who knows where I might end up as fast as that water is flowing.. if I have any luck finding any I will let ya know..thank you again for the information!
Hey, it is all fair game! It is nice to know that other people are into wild foods. I was suprised when I found that wild asparagus grows at all around here. I grew up picking grocery sacks full of the stuff in Iowa.
After your message my husband went and walked all through kendrick and along the creek and said he found nothing? We did a little walking along the creek by our house and did not find anything either. I guess those little suckers don't want us to find them...ha ha! Good luck with your hunting. Thank you for all of the information.
Yeah, I was on the footpath last nite and didn't see any either. I was eyeing the west bank below the junior high though. I thought I could see one over there near some cattails. Maybe not. Best of luck to you too!
I will check on it...A friend of ours said he used to find hundreds of them on some property he used to own. Maybe with any luck we might find some there since he still has permission to be on there. I am about to resort to the Montana burn areas just so I can find some... :) I will probably have a dang heart attack if I ever do find some..
Just wondering if you are still finding morels? We have been on vacation the last week and coming back I see that the asparagus has went to seed in a lot of places, just wondering if morel season is also coming to an end?
keep looking... I look on the N and E slopes. I use trilliums, glacier lillies and solomon's seal as vegetative indicators. think moist looking areas, broken canopy not too much leaf litter. pretty vague I know. look up trilliums and look for those. keep after it, I am transplant to ID and it took me a couple seasons to find any. remember they are pretty finicky and even the $$$ spots are only good a few days a year.
I will keep looking..except now the vegetation is getting tall and snakes have me a bit paranoid! I won't quit, it gives me something to do that could possibly be rewarding. Thanks for your input!
Keep looking! We have a big advantage over shroomers in the Midwest, in that we can follow spring up the mountain as it progresses. Just look higher and higher. I have found blacks in the Snowys as late as August in the sub-alpine zone, and a friend of mine found some nice blacks in late June atop the Bighorns at about 8K
