Still finding lots of them in Jaackson county 6" yellows and 3" greys. Finding a lot of singles in wierd places. Some going bad. Found some nice patches be small dead elms. Still watching two nice patches thinking about picking them. One patch I spotted 10 days ago about the size of your little fingers. A couple of them dried up, but worth the wait. Now they are about 2" to 3". I better check them today and maybe pick.We have lots in the freezer. The best way to cook is to roll in flour and fry in butter. If you are going to freeze: roll in flour fry halfway on both sides lay on cookie sheet, freeze. After frozen placed in freezer bags, vacume pack. We have been eating shrooms since May 2. Wife tried to o.d. me on them couple of days ago but Ha-Ha it didn't work! She is tired of messing around with them. They only come once a year and it is a short season.

Picked so many the last 2 days , I was giving them away, 1st time ever for that, I usually keep all for myself, just finished cleaning and drying, and then flouring they are freezing right now, I preserve this way, clean cold water rinse (no salt) , dry , dust with flour and then lay on cookie sheets to freeze, when completely frozen put in freezer bags or vacuum seal the bags. When you want them, dip in egg bath, flour again, do this while the morels are still frozen, and fry them either in butter or peanut oil, taste like you just pick them

Old Timer in Iowa

It's been a good year in eastern Iowa above average precipitation plus lots of snow this past winter. 1978 was the best year I can remember in over 50 years of mushroom hunting. We set a record for subsoil moisture plus warm temps at the right time. We had 52 packs of mushrooms in the freezer. What a year! Went out yesterday and got a nice bag of big yellows but some dried up so I left them for seed. It could be the end of the line till next year. I am going out today maybe for the last time. I still have one patch I have been watching for 2 weeks. They haven't grown much lately.I'm thinking about watering them to see what they will do because we have had no rain for about a week. What ever happened to Seth Irish is he still mushroom hunting? Hope everyone had a good year!
