Proper way to Harvest

Just wandered into the small woods behind my Livonia, MI home and saw two morels growing just off the path. Looked around a bit and didn't find any more, but figured i'd come home and see if I could find any information about the proper way to harvest them so I can insure more will grow in that area if I take them, things like, "do I cut them with a knife or pull them out?" and "how do I know if they've dropped spores yet?". Anybody know anything that will help me?
