Morel hunt in NW Wyoming?

Hey all!

Just wondering if there are any other interested or experienced morel hunters out there that would be willing to take a trip in the spring up the North Fork outside Cody, Wyoming. I'm not experienced at hunting, but have been doing lots of research on morels ever since last summer when I found my first morel by "accident" while searching for wild orchids. I have since been obsessed by this little fungus. There was a big wildfire-the Gunbarrel fire-last summer up there and am wanting to go check it out. If you are interested, leave a response so I can get in touch. I'd just like to have an experienced person to help with my first official hunt and share in any bounty. Thanks in advance!

Mitch, I am in Greybull and am close to the North Fork as well. I do not know if there are morels up there, but I am curious to find out. I have read from several resources that say that the year after a fire is a good place/time to look. I guess the spring moisture will play a role in that as well. I know last year when I was orchid hunting, I came across my first one by accident in the Shoshone Forest up near Cooke City, MT. That was at the end of June/first part of July. We go up there camping a few times a year. So, I know they are here, but I think it's a matter timing, moisture, altitude, etc. As I guess it is that way other places too. I know last year, the mountains up there got a lot of snow and rain! I'm willing to go find out maybe on a camping trip.

May camping trip

March 22 2009, 1:43 PM

Well, my husband and I are thinking of doing a first camping trip of the season up the NorthFork toward the end of May. It's still up in the air at this point and we don't get out of school until May 22nd. So, sometime after that. We are both inexperienced shroomers, so this will be a first for us. I will keep in touch on here for now, and when plans become a little more solid, I will email you directly. I cannot wait to check it out! Trying not to be too excited though, as we may or may not find some... I also cannot wait for camping/ATV season!

morels in wyoming

Hi,
I used to live in Jackson , WY and know of a couple of good places to forage for morels near that area. The details are very specific, so I won't explain here, but if you get the chance to forage in Jackson I have some good starting points for you.

Patrick,
I haven't been to the Jackson area much. I am in Greybull. We do make a trip or two or three to Yellowstone every summer though. Maybe during one of our trips the family and I could swing down there and do some foraging. What kind of morels do you find? Last summer, when I stumbled accidently upon them, they were blacks. I took pictures of them-I am big into taking wildflower picts-and sent the pictures to some folks on another morel website and they said they were blacks. I knew nothing about them at that point until I started researching. I didn't even realize that what I came across was edible or such a delicacy or I would have picked them! I am anxious to try them!
