Kentucky Finds

Well, I am itching to be back in the woods! Last year I found my first one on March 15th, unseasonably early for this area. But I just had to go into the woods to check yesterday....

Looking forward to a great year of hunting but our woods are a mess from all the ice storm damage.

Kentucky Hunting

April 10 2009, 3:55 PM

Hello Kentucky Shroomers!

I have a friend that moved to Kentucky and has yet to find a morel. Can you tell me what kind of trees to look under? In Iowa we find them under dead Elms, live Siver Maples and Apple trees. Also what is a general time frame. I live in Texas and go back to Iowa the first week of May. I have not been skunked since I started making the trips in 82.

my uncle went today and found 6 blacks in Hardin Co. also. Hopefully with all this rain gone for today and part of tomorrow, I may go to the woods myself. Anyone found any ticks yet this year? Hope not. I find one on me and I feel like there's a million more for the next few days.:)

Ticks are terrible again this year. Lots of deep woods OFF and then use dryer sheets in your shoes and that really helps.

I have found a total of 5. I am going back out today though. If it warms up I bet they will be up everywhere. I can't wait!

Daniel Boone National Forest

March 29 2009, 12:53 PM

Going turkey hunting on the Daniel Boone NF near Corbin, KY the 18th of April. Sure would be nice to find some morels on the trip. Any chance of finding some while I'm down there? Is there a lot of ice damage in that area?

I couldn't wait any longer and I went ahead and picked some of the ones I had been watching grow and yep, they are just as good as before! We will be hitting the woods all over Hardin County this week. I think I have only found about a dozen so far which is still very early for here. I look to have a great year. ;-)

We found 87 big blacks at a new spot on a east facing hill. Our regular producing spots aren't producing much yet. But these are beautiful!

We found the prettiest big blacks we have ever found in 20+ years of hunting yesterday. Again a different spot for us than usual. They were all about 6" tall and large enough if you sliced them, they would make a sandwich. 27 in total in one location on a east facing bluff.

Had another great day in the woods of Hardin County. I have found a total of 246. I can't believe I am about to say it but I have eaten enough to officially make myself feel sick. And the rest are getting frozen for my winter delight.

And we will be back at it tomorrow.....

Large yellows found in Cub Run KY

April 15 2009, 7:48 PM

I have a small 32 acre farm outside Cub Run KY it borders Mammoth cave national park, I filled a 5 gallon bucket Sunday 4/12/2009 within 15 to 20 minutes in a 25x 25 foot area above one of my springs under a giant elm tree they were growing 4 to 6 in a single clump and every single one of them were cream or yellows some larger than a coke can and only one peckerhead??, I couldnt believe how many in one spot I left many small ones in hopes of going back this weekened and still have several more springs and caves to explore, we had a very nasty ice storm last month that opened up alot of sunshine not sure ifthat contributed to the larger than normal find or not.. They are up and active now so dont wait if your between Bowling Green KY and Elizabethtown you might miss some great hunting. Good luck. Tim

Where and when do you hunt morels in Kentucky?

April 10 2009, 3:48 PM

Kentucky Finds - I have a friend that moved to Kentucky and has yet to find a morel there. So would you be so kind to answer these questions:
What kind of trees do you look under?
What is the time frame that you look in?
We always went by Lilacs blooming and the Mayapples out in Iowa.
We look under dead Elms, live Silver Maples and Apple trees.
Any hints would be greatly appreciated and passed on.

Thanks!!!

Where and When

April 11 2009, 11:49 PM

It all depends on the weather as to when to start looking,I have found them in Feb.But most years it starts in the middle of March and lasts until middle of May but have found them up into June depending on the weather.I find alot around Ash,Popular and cider, but dont limit my search to this.If your friend is close to Mamouth Cave National Park it is one of the best places I know of.

I found some this week, don't get much chance to hunt any more but found some while working on fences. (Seems like that's all I have done afeter the ice melted) Anyway found some on in creek bottoms. Found about 20 in a 10' circle. Never found'm that thick before. Gonna try to find some more in my normal spots when I get a few days off from the night job.

I am in northwest KY.
