Well, I am itching to be back in the woods! Last year I found my first one on March 15th, unseasonably early for this area. But I just had to go into the woods to check yesterday....
Looking forward to a great year of hunting but our woods are a mess from all the ice storm damage.
I have a friend that moved to Kentucky and has yet to find a morel. Can you tell me what kind of trees to look under? In Iowa we find them under dead Elms, live Siver Maples and Apple trees. Also what is a general time frame. I live in Texas and go back to Iowa the first week of May. I have not been skunked since I started making the trips in 82.
my uncle went today and found 6 blacks in Hardin Co. also. Hopefully with all this rain gone for today and part of tomorrow, I may go to the woods myself. Anyone found any ticks yet this year? Hope not. I find one on me and I feel like there's a million more for the next few days.:)
I live on the state line on the Fulton Co, KY , Obion Co, Tn line in northwest TN. Nothing shown here yet but you are right about the woods being a mess with the ice storm, i've never seen any thing like it. I work in the woods everyday, and it is bad. And YES ticks are out!!!!!!Good luck to everyone!!!!!!!!!!
Going turkey hunting on the Daniel Boone NF near Corbin, KY the 18th of April. Sure would be nice to find some morels on the trip. Any chance of finding some while I'm down there? Is there a lot of ice damage in that area?
hello fellow mushroom hunters. Looking forward to this years crop. I will be traveling to one of me favorite spots on Thursday (my next day off) and I will let you know what up. I will be traveling to Nashville, TN but my site is near Clarksville, TN. Hope all is well and lets keep talking. I live near Lexington, KY. I plan on hunting near hear in a couple of weeks or sooner. Thanks and happy hunting.
Jim
I couldn't wait any longer and I went ahead and picked some of the ones I had been watching grow and yep, they are just as good as before! We will be hitting the woods all over Hardin County this week. I think I have only found about a dozen so far which is still very early for here. I look to have a great year. ;-)
Hi everybody! I went hunting yesterday and found 12 nice sized blacks. I too thought it was a bit early, but they are here. Good luck and happy hunting! Oh, by the way, I hunted in Larue Co.
We found the prettiest big blacks we have ever found in 20+ years of hunting yesterday. Again a different spot for us than usual. They were all about 6" tall and large enough if you sliced them, they would make a sandwich. 27 in total in one location on a east facing bluff.
Had another great day in the woods of Hardin County. I have found a total of 246. I can't believe I am about to say it but I have eaten enough to officially make myself feel sick. And the rest are getting frozen for my winter delight.
Hi everyone! Went to the Red River Gorge April 5th...didnt have any luck. But my sis went to Cave city and found a few large yellow ones! Guess I wasnt in the right spot. Anyone find any at the Gorge yet??? Good Luck hunting!
Found 94 on Thursday and 171 on Saturday. Mostly greys and pecker heads with a few small yellows and blacks mixxed in. Have not found any large yellows yet, should be anytime. All found in the Mamouth Cave National Park.Come on and look with me guys plenty for all.
me and my BEST friend (because i'm a shroom hog and my tag alongs are limited !)stumbled up on 103(yes !!!!!)nice greys yesterday 4/11 in a creek bottom ! no trees just weeds and multiflora rose bushes !!!! it was alow spot where the creek had got out of the banks and setteled !grass was getting tall and they were hard to see espically UNDER those rose bushes !!!but i'm all patched up now gettin' ready to head back with my kids they love it ! it's gonna be a good year ! by the way we never made it to my OTHER honey hole !!! i'm 40 minutes from mammoth cave park.good huntin'
went back to the same place today ....found 87 more !mostly greys ...afew big yellows.open bottom faceing east ...never seen anything like it...been huntin' for 30+years...makes me wonder how many i've stepped on over the years.man i love these things!!!
We have found a few hundred in the low valleys in Letcher county the past couple of days. The mountain tops dont seem to be as plentiful right now, but only in time! Mostley yellows and a few blacks, just a handfull of whites.
I have a small 32 acre farm outside Cub Run KY it borders Mammoth cave national park, I filled a 5 gallon bucket Sunday 4/12/2009 within 15 to 20 minutes in a 25x 25 foot area above one of my springs under a giant elm tree they were growing 4 to 6 in a single clump and every single one of them were cream or yellows some larger than a coke can and only one peckerhead??, I couldnt believe how many in one spot I left many small ones in hopes of going back this weekened and still have several more springs and caves to explore, we had a very nasty ice storm last month that opened up alot of sunshine not sure ifthat contributed to the larger than normal find or not.. They are up and active now so dont wait if your between Bowling Green KY and Elizabethtown you might miss some great hunting. Good luck. Tim
Kentucky Finds - I have a friend that moved to Kentucky and has yet to find a morel there. So would you be so kind to answer these questions:
What kind of trees do you look under?
What is the time frame that you look in?
We always went by Lilacs blooming and the Mayapples out in Iowa.
We look under dead Elms, live Silver Maples and Apple trees.
Any hints would be greatly appreciated and passed on.
It all depends on the weather as to when to start looking,I have found them in Feb.But most years it starts in the middle of March and lasts until middle of May but have found them up into June depending on the weather.I find alot around Ash,Popular and cider, but dont limit my search to this.If your friend is close to Mamouth Cave National Park it is one of the best places I know of.
I found some this week, don't get much chance to hunt any more but found some while working on fences. (Seems like that's all I have done afeter the ice melted) Anyway found some on in creek bottoms. Found about 20 in a 10' circle. Never found'm that thick before. Gonna try to find some more in my normal spots when I get a few days off from the night job.
