Does anyone have any idea how much longer we have to find morels in Southeast Ohio (like Zanesville area)? I found about 25 last week, but none for the last few days. Someone told me may be too late.
I have been morel hunting for 20 years and have never gotten more than three mushrooms in one spot.
This spring in NE Ohio on about May 7th I was driving home from work when I saw my 15 year old son starting to mow a neighbor's yard. I stopped to say hello.
He said "Dad, you have to check this out. There morels all over this yard"
I figured he was wrong, but I got out to check it out.
Sure enough, there where about 18 good sized morels growing in the grass around this house. It wasn't particularly shady. There was no fallen leaves, my son had raked the yard back in the fall.
So forget all of those hard facts about where they grow. They grow wherever in the hell they fell like it. The yard did have some elms and a tulip tree.
I found more this year than i have in the past 15 years. You will hear a million theorys on where to find them this year they were all out in the open fields and larger, so your right nob ody can be for sure they grow where they want. Cant wait for next year.
