slow down!!! This time of year they are small. I found 25 today and they were 1-5 inches tall, all in one little area. 3-4 times per year you find a patch, when you do find one set your bag or a hat on a branch next to your find and then comb the area real good and you will find out there is more!!!
My 25 I found looked to be on a string from east to west--go figure

Some Good Help

April 22 2009, 5:22 PM

My best luck is in older chunks of trees. I swear by trying to find timber with Elm trees(piss elm). The deader the better. More dead elm trees the more shrooms i find. Dont go fast and look straight at the ground, not in front of you. They are small and you will miss them. Dont be afraid to check out decaying trees, rotting on the ground. You will get the eye for it once you find one. Camping parks with mature timber is great public place to check out. Might be crowded but you will find them. Were you find one, more than likely there are more very close by. good luck this is good advice i promise.

To Shawn

Shawn,
Hey brother. In Missouri, northern anyway, the ones I found today were very hard to decifer from leaves. Because the color of them is the same as leaves and walnut shells.
What I do when I find one, is remain calm, as hard as it is in the beginning of the season, is squat down to the lowest level you can get before you pick it, look around the same area you found one. That way you can use what you just found as a reference to find others. Usually, I have to find one or two before I get, "My Goggles" on. It will surprise you how much it works if you try this.
Two, look above you after you find the 'shroom, you'll notice that there is a slight clearing in the trees. Use this to identify potential areas for others, also, use awkward trees around you as a reference point to come back later.
Lastly, be aware of your surroundings. Try to look on little banks that face east-south-east (ESE) South, and WSW. This might make it a bit easier for ya. I hope it does because those shrooms grow for us to eat. They serve no other purpose. Happy huntin'.
