They are here! I found four small black morels at low altitude in north-central Wyoming yesterday (April 28). They were located on a grassy bank with good sun but good good surrounding grass cover. This is the exact location my wife and I first found them last season, on May 5. Next week should be good for low altitude blacks, with rain and warmer nighttime temps. I also found some succulent young oysters-yum!
26 more blacks yesterday (May 3). Most were all in one patch, in taller grass than usual for blacks. Things are still quite slow, with nothing on the more productive areas yet. It has been pretty cool most evenings. It seems too early for yellows yet. Oysters are doing great, no bug holes yet, firm and tasty.
Went to the old Homestake logging property on the Wyoming side of the Black Hills by Moskee and found quite a few blacks in aspen pods around 4,000 foot elevation. Good rain and light snow last night should help 'em pop this weekend.
Found about 25-30 more yesterday, May 17. Most were small yellows, but found a few very nice big but fresh mature yellows and blacks. It has been too dry for a good crop this year- My wife went on May 10 and found only 4 small ones. Oysters are doing fine though.
Glad you found some over in the Hills- still big snowdrifts on top of the Bighorns- might be some early blacks in the side canyons, I will have to check soon.
where do you find them in the bighorns...i live in greybull and am thinking about checking it out later in June sometime. Any info would be great-thanks in advance! I'm new to this morel thing and am anxious to try them and also anxious about the hunt!
Look on the big burn you guys had on the forest in the Absarokas a few years back (forget the name), starting next month sometime- go a few days after a good rain.
We looked between Cody and the Park this past weekend on THE burn and found zip. Still too early? Lots of rain and hail when we went through the park on Sunday
I found nothing in favorable habitat at about 9K last week, but didn't expect to see them, as there were occasional snowdrifts and lots of cold snowmelt running everywhere.
I think it's been too cold. Seems like since the first of June we've been getting good moisture, but it's been so cold. I too would like to look where you been looking, but probably in another couple of weeks or after it warms up for a few days. This would be my first ever mushroom hunt, so I probably wouldn't be too successful anyway...LOL!
