I went out yesterday before the rain for about 45 minutes. I checked some southeast facing slopes and nothing, but I think with the 1/4 inch of rain we had last night and this morning I will be going and checking the spot one more time tonight.
I have been hunting in SW MN near New Ulm and have been skunked 3 times. I hit the same places I did last year and am not yielding anything. It must be to early. Yet I keep reading all the stories of people north of her that are having success.
I have been hearing that same report today as well. I was out last night in Rice county and was able to locate some 2" greys and they were very young. I left them for like Thurs. Today I went trough a spot on Monday where the soil was dryer and found none. today I went there with my son and found over 40. They are there.... Another report that they are getting bags full in other areas in the County. My buddy found 45 today as well. Just get out and find the dead elm and Mossy soil. Warmer facing slopes and fallow them around to the north in a week or so. All About Soil Temp!
I finally scored a patch of morel's today. They were on a hill facing the north in pretty decent vegetation. No big trees around, just some small brush. We found 48 shrooms of all sizes. Lots of small ones, so I think this weekend should be pretty good.
I found some morels last night it was a good time, I left a couple little ones out in the woods and I will go back on Thursday and see how much they grew. I had one of my buddies call me this morning and tell me he found 50 huge yellows, not really tall but wide when he was turkey hunting, needless to say he put the shotgun down and picked morels.
I hunted for about an hour and a half today and found 1 shroom by a dead elm. My spots from last year don't seem to be producing anything this year. I'm about to give up on them.
Found a few yellows yesterday and about 2 doz. greys. The yellows haven't been as plentiful yet this year but my thoughts are they start popping after the greys.
I am beginning to wonder if the season in Minnesota might be less than stellar. We have frost warnings for tonight. This winter just won't let go. Everyone I've talked to have said that the shrooms seem to be few and far between this year.
I had planned to go out and look in rice county today with my Daughter. This would be our first time hunting and niether of us have ever eaten them before. I have been reading about them over the last two weeks and today I was really hoping to get out hunt. Would it be worth going out todayor would I be wasting my time due to the weather.
Hello,
I would go out and look if I were you, the mushrooms that are up are ok yet, if it freezes tonight which I don't think it will the mushrooms will be shot. I think we will still be getting more mushrooms next week if it doesn't get too hot. I am going to go tomorrow and look at a few spots so I have my fingers crossed that it doesn't get too cold. You might not run across any mushrooms but at least you will be out in the woods. Good Luck.
Thanks for the response mike, I'm really hoping we can stumble into a few this afternoon. Should be a good time either way. Does anyone know if the parks in rice county have a rep for morels?
have any of you checked out the minnesota message board at morel .com ? lots of minnesotans with their morel info! see you there! i like this board too!
This has to be really bizarre. I found about 15 in my back yard in an inner city neighborhood in South Minneapolis. Found just a couple last year in some mulch under a shrub that were dried up by the time I realized what they were so I chopped 'em up & spread the bits around. This I found a half dozen in the exact spot & a bunch more spread around the yard - 2 huge ones in a window well. Go figure. My neighbor & I have both lost elms to Dutch Elm disease in the last couple years but had them removed ASAP. Possibly the spores were just in the bag of mulch from the garden store??
I live in Stearns too and its seems like we are having a tough season. But don't give up on them. Last week I found a few tiny greys in Warner County parks. I plan to go back and check my spot again tomorrow. I hear Quarry Park is a good spot too, but I haven't had much luck there myself and there's a lot of competition to get them. Also, Mississippi County Park had good promise (lots of fall shroom remains and dead/dying elms), but still haven't turned up any there.
Today, though I hit a good patch at a rural property near the river. Yes, I did ask permission :). It was still only about a pound worth, 16 shrooms. One was the size of my fist though. They were in the flats, under a dying ash and some rotting logs. I found elm seeds on the ground in the area, but never did pick out which tree they could have come from. I never did figure out which tree they were centered on either, but only found that one patch. I think it has been a bit too dry here. We should be getting rain this weekend that will help.
Yeah, and the Minnesota state mushroom is the morel! I live on the northshore and haven't found a one in 4 years of hunting, but when I lived as far north in the upper peninsula of Michigan, I found so many. I think Michigan should have the morel as their state mushroom.
I have seen some folks talking on the morel.com board about the end of the morel season hitting. I am thinking they are right (for Stearns Co area anyway). My latest patch find had 3/4 of the shrooms dried or rotted.
Overall I found 4 lbs this year which was good for me, but they took a lot of work. At least I have some spots to hit next year. Hopefully we have a bumper crop in 2010.
If anyone is still finding good patches, please post. Would love to hear that I am wrong.
