Tuesday the 5th , 14 BIG yellows and 7 grays. Went back to the same spot and found 1 Big yellow and a few smaller 1s plus 4 lbs of greys , all freshly poppin . I always thought Big yellows came last , after the lil greys , sure is a weird year . Hope it lasts alil longer too . Had to leave some of the tiny greys to see how fast they grow in the next couple days , provided the deer dont get to them first , they seem to have ate ALOT of the big yellows , finding only hole where they were !!!

Finally found some yellows in decatur county. Around 28 yellows were found. It is not a good year yet. Talk to several hunters and they are not finding many if any. Anyone else having luck. We found these around the dead elm trees. However more trees than mushrooms, there were only 2 spots on the southeast sides. Don't usually post but felt a need to this year.

Sure I don't know everything about mushrooms, but have read and been told that once they have popped that is all the bigger they will get. Better off picking them when you see them. Just get picked by somebody else or eaten by deer.

That couldn't be further from the truth. I can't remember how many times I have found tiny morels and left them be just to go back a week later to find they are four times (or more) larger. Your sources are wrong.

1 more trip to the Honey hole

May 20 2009, 12:06 AM

My constantly yielding spot mabe the signal of the close of the season here. Today only a dozen yellows , some as big as baseballs and a few starting to dryup , tho 2 where juss rolling out . Seems the north sides are the bloom spots right now . With the heat high now I dont antisipate a revival this year , tho I have faired well . Good luck to the northern states , I may have to trip up there and try to capture some more of those lil elusive devils .
Still consider this a strange year , late bloom , big yellows first then greys and big 1s I might add , then yellows again and they for the most part have been biguns . Comeon Iowans speakup , tell about yer finds !

Yes their still real fresh on the north slopes. Slightly dried on the flats and well dried out on the south slopes. I picked 8 pounds yester day west of Mardrid on the north slopes.
