It has been very cold here. It is raining and if the sun comes out we might get some mushrooms soon. Last year this time we were finished, but this year not started.
Canada is a big country, with dozens of microclimates. I live in Manitoba, 200 miles north of Fargo, ND, and we've also been unseasonably cool. Yet, I've managed to find four or five dozen smallish (2" max) blacks in certain areas. You will not find them deep in the shaded woods or in areas of northern exposure. I found almost all of mine on south-facing edges of treed pastureland. West-facing areas also benefit from warmer afternoon sun exposure. So, even if the common belief is that they are "not out yet", careful hunting in prime areas will likely yield you a modest haul of early blacks, and you'll be the envy of your fellow mushroom-hunting friends! Good luck!
I am in Manitoba as well. It has been nice and sunny so maybe I can find some shrooms this weekend.
We do have one problem, my neighbor tells me the mushroom patch is being watched by a bear. It is just boogy enough to give the mushrooms some moisture.
