What's in store?

Just trying to look into the crystal ball and forecast the future of horology for the average WIS.

I recently read a post that any quartz watch could beat the pants off, in terms of accuracy, of any COSC chronometer the Swiss or anybody else could build. We are all aware of this fact. Is super accuracy the absolute hallmark of what constitutes a watch?

I have all manner of movements in my watch drawer, and generally, find myself putting on the same old standby. The Seiko 5 that kind of has the Explorer I look about it. While it is not accurate, the 30 secs or whatever a day are just fine for me. The watch looks good, is practical and bulletproof, plus the price is right.

I own two Atomic watches, Skyhawk AT and the Casio MT-G. They get little wrist time compared to the Seiko, but I much prefer the solar, atomic idea to watches that require battery replacement.

I have numerous Seiko quartz chronographs, stashed away, 7a48,7t34,7t32, and 7a28, which are never worn.
The auto diver has the je n'est sais quoi aspect, I get a lot of pleasure from donning one of these, whereas the auto chrono, doesn't.

I guess I better hang on to my entire collection, till I can get a handle on this.

Good question?.....I've got a Bunson Burner of a post lined-up

Yep, I've finally caught that quack red-handed with a lie he has made up.

I'll be posting about it later,
Jimmy

I like and love both the Seiko Auto's and the quartz movements equally. I'm talking vintage for the most part, but there 7S26 SKX line does perforn rather well since I got my first example recently.

I still like the upper par lines better though, but it's still hard to beat a nice serviced 21 jewel 6306 or 17 jewel 6309 when properly tuned with High Performance suspensions running on jet fuel.

I agree re the SKX and I noticed that the 007 I have is regulated better than any of the 5-6 Seiko 5's that I have. Here's my 007 in front of my Tivoli 2, a nice little micro stereo, not as small as the Headroom Ultra Micro Amp, but a little classic.

Here's my Seiko SPRO19J, a unique quartz chrono, NOS

and here's one I am interested in, 4r15 mvmt?

Not that I think quartz are better than autos by any strech, just that I like these get-up and go no nonsense utility.

I love the auto's and there the bedrock of what a watch is supposed to be.

If it were not for the watch, Pink Floyds "Time" on Dark side of the Moon, would have no meaning to me I suppose.

Love the looks of that 4R15 diver there, and looks to be of a great heft and a good hunkier but reasonable size...Nice watch!

Danka,
Jimmy

Autos Rule!...

I have quite a few G-Shocks, but I didn't buy them because of the quartz accuracy. I bought them because they are cool watches. I also do like that I can get an Atomic signal with them and use that to set my Autos.

Just about any Auto, (that has a decent movement in it), can be regulated to run +- 2 sec a day. That is accurate enough for me.

Autos have much more character to them and also have that tactile feel.

maybe a Doxa or maybe Omega, but there's no doubt that Seiko is & always will be my watch of choice for any venue whatever it may be from a dress shirt & tie to a divers dry suit.

Cheers,
Jim

thats why I have none, and even reading fine small print is a chore now, so maybe time for some glasses down the road for me too.

Good to see you BTW mate,

I agree, 20/15 for long range, but 20/200 to read, +2diopter reading glasses for that and a continual pain to take them off, put them on.

Good to hear you're working, I'm trying to get out of that scene as soon as I can

That's pretty good acuity for range Rick, I used to have 20/15 and passed the Helicopter

pilots test hands down along with other involved test's all the while through, and a few years after I got out of the service.

Today or I should say as of last year, I think my vision has degraded some to 20/20 & 20/30 tested. Small print is starting to give me a problem some, but I can help that with a rich eye food diet I think, and by not spending so many hours at the PC screen.

Cheers,
Jimmy
